Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

The evidence spread out across the antique oak desk was damning, undeniable, and utterly comprehensive. Each folder contained notarized bank records, digital wire receipts, and color printouts of forged signatures where my father’s natural right-leaning script had been clumsily traced over illuminated light boxes.

Serena’s composure shattered entirely. She took three steps back, away from her husband, her eyes darting toward the front door. "I didn't know about this," she stammered, holding up her hands defensively as if trying to ward off a physical blow. "Julian told me it was an early inheritance distribution! He told me Arthur wanted him to manage the portfolio because Elena wasn't capable! I had nothing to do with any forged papers!"

"Shut up, Serena!" Julian screamed, turning on his wife with bared teeth. "You wore the jewelry! You signed the lease on the beachfront villa! You demanded three hundred thousand for your sister’s gallery opening! Don't you dare stand there and pretend you were an innocent spectator!"

"You lied to me!" she shrieked back, her veneer of high-society elegance peeling away into raw, ugly desperation. "You told me you were Arthur's sole heir! You swore on your life that the sister would get nothing more than a nominal payout!"

The relatives who had spent the last two hours treating me like an outcast now watched the spectacle with absolute horror. Aunt Clara stepped toward me, her eyes wide with shame. "Elena... dear God, we had no idea. Julian told us Arthur was losing his mind... he said you were keeping him isolated in that hospice wing to change the will..."

"You believed him because it was convenient," I said evenly, staring directly into her eyes until she looked away. "Julian was charming. He promised all of you pieces of the pie if you backed him as the sole administrator. He promised Raymond the commercial lot on Fourth Street, didn't he?"

Uncle Raymond turned beet red and silently slipped out of the room, his footsteps echoing down the hardwood hallway toward the front door. The pack was scattering, leaving the alpha to face the consequences alone.

Special Agent Miller pulled a digital tablet from his satchel, tapping the screen and turning it toward Julian. "Mr. Vance, this flash drive recovered from the safe contains audio recordings captured by Arthur Vance’s personal digital assistant in his bedroom. It records four distinct instances of you demanding he sign over the deed to this house, followed by explicit threats to pull his palliative care staff if he refused."

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked around the room, searching for an ally, an escape route, anything to cling to. But there was no one left. Every cousin, aunt, and childhood friend in that room saw him precisely for what he was: a thief who had robbed his own father on his deathbed and then assaulted his sister at the cemetery to cover his tracks.

"You think you’ve won, Elena?" Julian whispered, his face twisted in venomous hatred. "Even if they take it all, there's nothing left for you. The money is gone. I lost the final tranche in the crypto crash two weeks ago. The accounts are completely drained. You got the house, but you can’t even afford the property taxes on an empty shell. Dad left you holding a rotting corpse."

"You always underestimated Dad, Julian," I said, reaching into the pocket of my coat. "And you completely forgot who helped him start this business thirty years ago."
