Chapter 4 - The Hidden Foundation

Julian frowned, his arrogant bravado attempting a desperate comeback. "What are you talking about? You were a schoolteacher. You never knew a damn thing about the company."

"I was a schoolteacher because I chose peace over corporate warfare," I replied, pulling out a slim silver key that had been resting against my father's old pocket watch. "Dad never kept his real legacy in commercial bank accounts that you had access to. When he realized what you were doing six months ago, he didn't just document your crimes. He liquidated his private, unlisted assets—assets you never even knew existed because you never bothered to ask about his life before he made his first million."

Attorney Price stepped back to the safe, reaching deep into the false back panel behind the metal housing. With a sharp tug, the back wall clicked and dropped forward on miniature brass hinges, revealing a second, hidden compartment that had been concealed behind industrial-grade fireproofing.

Inside sat a heavy, fireproof lockbox.

Julian’s jaw dropped. Serena stopped her quiet sobbing, her head snapping up with renewed greed. But before Julian could take a single step forward, the second federal investigator placed a heavy, gloved hand directly against his chest, pushing him firmly back against the wall.

"Do not move," the agent instructed coldly.

I stepped forward and inserted the silver key into the lockbox. The lock turned effortlessly, oiled and maintained with the meticulous care that defined everything Arthur Vance did. Inside lay three thick binders bound in black leather, accompanied by several certificates of title bearing gold government seals.

"Julian," Attorney Price said, reading from the master ledger inside the box, "your father was fully aware that you would exhaust the operating cash. He let you run through it precisely because it gave the federal examiners clear, undisputable jurisdiction over interstate wire fraud. Meanwhile, every real asset—the original warehouse on the riverfront, the patents for the modular steel framing systems he engineered in the nineties, and the land trusts covering three hundred acres of timberland in the north valley—were transferred irrevocably into the Elena Vance Living Trust."

Julian swayed on his feet, his hands shaking so violently he had to lean against a mahogany bookshelf for support. "That's impossible... those patents alone generate half a million a year in royalties..."

"Seven hundred and fifty thousand, actually," I corrected him, looking him straight in his bloodshot eyes. "And every single penny has been legally shielded from your creditors, your lifestyle, and your fraudulent claims. You spent millions of stolen money on depreciating cars, parties, and bad trades, Julian. But Dad ensured that the foundation of this family remained in the hands of the child who actually respected his sweat."

"Elena... please," Serena suddenly gasped, rushing forward and dropping to her knees beside the desk, discarding all pretense of pride. "Think of our children! Think of your nephews! You can't let them take everything! We’ll be completely ruined! We have a balloon payment on the house next Friday!"

"You should have thought about my nephews before you let your husband assault me over my father's open grave," I answered, stepping back so she couldn't touch the hem of my dress.
