Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The room descended into utter chaos. Chloe let out a sharp cry of betrayal, ripping her diamond-encrusted veil from her hair and throwing it onto the floor.
""You lied to me!"" she screamed at Lucas, tears smearing her expensive mascara. ""My father told me you were an equal partner in Carter Logistics! He told me you brought fifty million in liquid assets to this marriage! You're nothing! You're just a thief living off your sister's back!""
""Chloe, baby, please, listen to me!"" Lucas pleaded, falling to his knees and trying to grab the hem of her wedding dress. ""I didn't know the full details! Dad handled all the paperwork! I just signed what they told me to sign! I love you!""
""Don't touch me!"" Chloe shrieked, slapping his hands away in front of everyone. ""You pathetic coward! The wedding is off! I am filing for an immediate annulment!""
She turned on her father with venomous fury. ""And you, Dad! You dragged my name into a federal investigation? The Vance family name is ruined! Ruined!"" She stormed out of the side door of the chamber, slamming it so hard the glass panes rattled in their frames.
Richard Vance sank heavily into a chair, burying his face in his hands. He knew the law better than anyone in the room. He knew that tampering with a federal trust, forging probate codicils, and laundering stolen funds across state banking systems meant disbarment, complete asset forfeiture, and at least fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.
Arthur Carter stood shaking, looking at me with pathetic, tear-filled eyes. ""Emily... please, my baby girl. I’m your father. I made a mistake. The business was struggling after your grandfather died, and we had so many debts. We needed to keep up appearances for the banks! I was going to give it all back to you eventually! I swear I was!""
""You had twelve years, Arthur,"" I answered, looking him dead in the eye without a shred of pity. ""For twelve years, every time I came home on leave, you and Eleanor treated me like an outsider. When I came home from my first deployment with shrapnel wounds and trauma from saving wounded soldiers, Mom told me I smelled like gunpowder and demanded I stay in a motel so I wouldn't embarrass Lucas’s high-school friends.""
""Emily, that's not fair—"" Eleanor started, but she choked on her words as Colonel Miller stepped between us, handing her an official notice.
""Mrs. Carter, pursuant to the emergency federal injunction, all domestic bank accounts, investment portfolios, and credit lines under the names of Arthur Carter, Eleanor Carter, and Lucas Carter have been frozen,"" Colonel Miller announced coldly. ""Furthermore, the residential estate in McLean, Virginia, which was purchased entirely with funds illegally diverted from the William Carter Revocable Trust, has been placed under federal receivership. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the property.""
Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as if suffering a physical heart attack. ""Vacate? That is my dream home! Where am I supposed to live? What about my society committee? What about the gala next month?!""
""Perhaps you can look into renting a small apartment, Mrs. Carter,"" Alexander remarked with cutting irony. ""Or perhaps you can get yourself a job. After all, you wouldn't want anyone to think you're living off someone else's accomplishments like an improper woman.""
Aunt Marlene, who had quietly slipped into the back of the room to witness the disaster, backed away toward the door, terror written across her face.
""Marlene, don't you dare run!"" Eleanor cried out. ""Tell them! Tell them Arthur is an honorable businessman!""
""I... I have to go, Eleanor,"" Marlene stammered, avoiding everyone’s eyes. ""My husband... we have an appointment. We can't be associated with this."" She turned and fled down the hallway, leaving Eleanor completely abandoned by the very society peers she had worshiped her entire life.

Lucas sat on the floor, weeping openly, his tuxedo jacket rumpled and covered in floor dust. He looked up at me, his eyes hollow. ""Emily... what am I supposed to do? I don't know how to do anything else. The company was all I had.""
""You can do what I did twelve years ago, Lucas,"" I said softly, looking down at my broken brother. ""You can learn what it feels like to earn your own living without riding on someone else’s sacrifice.""
