Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The heavy SUV door shut, instantly sealing us into quiet luxury. The driver pulled away from the curb, leaving the imposing silhouette of the Carter estate fading into the rearview mirror.
I leaned my head against Alexander’s broad shoulder, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years. He wrapped his arm around me, kissing the crown of my head before gently taking both of my hands into his lap.
""Are you holding up alright, Major?"" he asked softly, his tone completely different from the steel he had displayed inside the foyer.
""Better than I thought I would,"" I whispered, glancing out the tinted window as the streetlights blurred past. ""Seeing her face when you walked through that door... she looked terrified, Alexander. She actually looked terrified.""
""She should be,"" he said coldly. ""What she did up there was petty, cruel, and pathetic. But more importantly, she doesn't know that Colonel Miller just landed at the regional airfield with the complete unsealed probate archive from Richmond.""
A shiver of cold anticipation ran down my spine. ""It's really finished? The forensic audit?""
""Every single page,"" Alexander confirmed, pulling a slim leather folder from the seat pocket beside him and opening it. ""Your grandfather, William Carter, was a brilliant man, Emily. He knew his son Arthur had no head for real business and only knew how to burn through cash to maintain appearances. When your grandfather passed away twelve years ago, he left seventy percent of Carter Logistics and the historical family trust directly to you. He named your father merely as an interim trustee until you turned twenty-five or completed your professional residency.""
I looked down at the highlighted documents under the dim interior reading light. My grandfather had practically raised me. When I was ten, he would sit with me in his vast mahogany study, teaching me about supply chains, balance sheets, and integrity. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a man of profound discipline who always told me that true strength lay in service and honesty.
When he died during my first year of college, my parents told me that Grandfather had passed away completely bankrupt due to failed real estate ventures. They claimed there was no inheritance, no trust, and no money left. My father had used that fabricated bankruptcy as an emotional weapon, insisting that my enlisting in the Army was a selfish escape while Lucas had to carry the heavy burden of entering the struggling family firm.
""My father forged the secondary codicil, didn't he?"" I asked, my throat tightening.
""He didn't just forge a codicil,"" Alexander replied, tapping a finger on a red-stamped affidavit. ""Arthur colluded with the Carter family’s long-time estate attorney, Richard Vance. They fabricated a fraudulent clause stating that if you enlisted in the military against your father's explicit wishes, your entire equity would be irrevocably forfeited and transferred to Lucas. They buried the true will in a private vault, paid off the probate clerk, and have been living lavishly off your dividend payouts for over a decade.""
""Richard Vance..."" The realization struck me like a physical blow. ""Lucas’s fiancée is Chloe Vance. Richard Vance is her father.""
""Exactly,"" Alexander said, his eyes narrowing in disgust. ""This wedding tomorrow isn't just a celebration of young love. It's an illegal merger designed to permanently seal the fraud. Richard Vance and your father drew up a prenuptial agreement that absorbs Carter Logistics into Vance Holdings tomorrow afternoon immediately following the ceremony. Once that ink dries and the company assets are transferred across state lines, unraveling their paper trail would take years of international litigation.""
""They're using my grandfather's blood, sweat, and tears to finance Lucas's fake high-society lifestyle,"" I said, feeling a fierce, righteous anger replace any remaining trace of grief. ""Lucas bought his multi-million dollar penthouse in Arlington with my trust money. Mom’s couture wardrobe, the lavish country club galas, this ridiculous half-million-dollar wedding at the St. Regis Grand Ballroom... it was all bought with my grandfather's legacy.""

""And tomorrow, the bill comes due,"" Alexander said, reaching into the garment bag laid across the back seat. He carefully smoothed the crisp lapel of the replacement Army dress uniform he had brought me. It was tailored to absolute perfection, adorned with my Major rank insignias, my Parachutist Badge, my Combat Medical Badge, and my Meritorious Service ribbons.
""Get some rest tonight at the hotel, Emily,"" Alexander said softly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear. ""Tomorrow morning, you put on your armor. And we take back everything that belongs to you.""
