Chapter 5 - The Wedding Vows and the Hidden Chamber

""By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.""
Lucas leaned in and kissed Chloe, but there was no joyous spark in his eyes—only deep, gnawing anxiety. The polite applause from the guests was scattered, thin, and hesitant. As soon as the kiss broke, Lucas glanced nervously down at my father and Richard Vance, who were already motioning toward the small ceremonial signing chamber adjacent to the altar.
According to tradition, the bride, groom, and their fathers were supposed to enter the chamber to sign the official state marriage registry before greeting their guests at the grand reception. But today, the signing chamber held a far more sinister purpose.
""Lucas, Chloe, let's go. Quickly,"" Richard Vance commanded under his breath, hurrying the newlyweds off the altar steps and pushing open the heavy mahogany door of the private room.
Arthur followed right behind them, practically running to escape the stares of his peers. Eleanor quickly scurried after her husband, desperate to get away from the humiliating aura Alexander and I cast over her social circle.
As the heavy oak door was about to shut behind them, a strong, gloved hand caught the frame.
Alexander pushed the door open with effortless strength. I stepped inside right behind him, followed immediately by Colonel Miller and Special Agent Marcus Vance.
""What is the meaning of this?!"" Richard Vance snarled, whirling around. He was standing beside a long conference table where several thick stacks of legal bond paper were spread out next to a Montblanc fountain pen. ""This is a private family chamber! You have no legal right to barge in here! General Hale, I respect your rank, but you are trespassing on private property during a private family function!""
""Is that so, Mr. Vance?"" Alexander replied calmly, stepping into the center of the room and clasping his hands behind his back. ""Because according to federal statute 18 U.S. Code Section 1512, federal investigators have every right to intervene when grand felony fraud and corporate obstruction are taking place in plain sight.""
Eleanor gasped, retreating into the corner beside the floral arrangements. ""Lucas! Call security! Have this crazy woman and her thugs thrown out of this venue immediately!""
""Security won't be coming, Eleanor,"" I said, my voice cutting through her screeching like a scalpel. ""The venue’s security team has already been relieved of duty by the Virginia State Police and federal marshals stationed in the lobby.""
Arthur leaned against the table, his breath coming in ragged gasps. ""Emily... please. You don't know what you're doing. This is your brother's wedding! Don't destroy our family over ancient grudges!""
""Ancient grudges, Arthur?"" Colonel Miller spoke up, opening his leather portfolio and laying three thick, red-bound folders directly over the merger documents. ""Twelve years ago, you filed an altered Last Will and Testament for the late William Carter in Henrico County Probate Court. You falsely testified under oath that your daughter, Emily Carter, forfeited her controlling interest in Carter Logistics by entering military service.""
Chloe, the bride, looked completely bewildered, clutching her lace veil. ""Lucas... what are they talking about? What will? What is Carter Logistics? Daddy, you told me Lucas owned that company outright!""
Lucas looked down at the floor, sweating profusely, unable to meet his new wife’s eyes.
""Shut up, both of you!"" Richard Vance barked, losing his aristocratic composure entirely. ""Those files are sealed! No one has the authority to audit a closed probate proceeding without a supreme court warrant!""
""Good thing I brought one,"" Special Agent Marcus Vance said, stepping forward with a cold smirk. He pulled a crisp, blue-stamped document from his coat pocket and slid it across the table until it tapped Richard’s Montblanc pen.
""Hello, cousin Richard,"" Marcus said quietly. ""Signed by Chief Judge Harrison this morning at six o'clock. A comprehensive federal search, seizure, and asset-freezing warrant. Turns out, when you use military mail services and interstate wire transfers to hide stolen trust dividends belonging to an active-duty military surgeon, it falls straight under federal jurisdiction.""
Richard’s hands began to shake violently. He stared down at the judge’s signature, his aristocratic facade crumbling into dust.
""You forged my grandfather’s signature, Dad,"" I said, stepping closer to Arthur. ""You stole seventy million dollars of company equity, took my dividend checks every quarter, and told our relatives that I was a worthless failure who abandoned the family. You used my sweat, my grandfather's blood, and my stolen name to buy your mansions, your luxury cars, and this very wedding.""

Eleanor lunged forward, her eyes wild with hysteria. ""It belonged to our family! You ran off to play soldier! Lucas stayed here! Lucas deserved that money! You had no right to take it from him!""
""It never belonged to Lucas, Eleanor,"" Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register of icy finality that froze the room. ""And as of five minutes ago, neither of you has a single penny left.""
