Chapter 4 - The Arrival

The St. Regis chapel was packed to maximum capacity. Over three hundred guests filled the mahogany pews, surrounded by cascading arches of imported white roses, delicate silk ribbons, and glowing candlelight. A string quartet played softly in the balcony, filling the vast cathedral-like room with serene classical melodies.

Lucas stood at the altar, looking dashing in his black tuxedo, though his eyes darted nervously toward the back doors every few seconds. Beside him stood his groomsmen, all sons of prominent local businessmen. On the front right pew, Eleanor Carter sat like a queen, wearing a designer champagne-colored gown, whispering proudly to the wealthy socialites surrounding her. She had regained her arrogant posture, soaking in the admiring glances of the crowd.

The music shifted to the opening chords of Pachelbel's Canon in D. The massive oak doors at the back of the chapel swung open, and the congregation stood up in unison, expecting to see the bridesmaids begin their processional.

Instead, the heavy, rhythmic click of military boots echoed through the vaulted hall.

A collective gasp rippled through the pews.

I walked down the central aisle, standing tall and proud in my dress uniform. My gold Major oak leaves caught the glow of the chandeliers. The ribbons on my chest—representing two tours in active conflict zones, trauma surgeries performed under mortar fire, and twelve years of selfless service—shone with undeniable honor.

And walking beside me, matching my stride with absolute military precision, was Lieutenant General Alexander Hale.

The whispers began instantly, sweeping through the crowd like wildfire.

""Is that General Hale? The Deputy Director of Operations?""

""Look at his stars! What is a three-star general doing here?""

""Wait, is that Arthur’s daughter? I thought they said she was just a disgraced runaway nurse!""

""Look at her medals... my God, that's a Bronze Star with Valor!""

Eleanor’s face instantly drained of all color. Her mouth fell open in horror as she watched her carefully orchestrated, delicate high-society aesthetic get completely eclipsed by raw military majesty. Arthur gripped the back of the front pew to keep his balance, his knees visibly shaking.

Lucas looked completely bewildered at the altar, while his best man whispered urgently into his ear, trying to figure out what was happening.

We didn't walk to the back pews like an embarrassed afterthought. We walked directly to the front of the church. When we reached the front row where Eleanor was seated, Alexander paused, turning his cold, piercing gaze down upon her.

""Good morning, Mrs. Carter,"" Alexander said, his voice easily carrying over the silenced string quartet. ""As you can see, Emily managed to find something proper to wear.""

Eleanor couldn't even formulate a reply. She pressed herself back into the wooden pew, clutching her designer purse against her chest as if it could shield her from the shame burning through the room.

I looked at my father. ""Grandfather always taught me to arrive on time, Dad. Wouldn't want to miss Lucas’s big moment.""

We took our seats on the left side of the aisle, right in the primary family section. Behind us, several uniformed officers and two sharply dressed men carrying official leather folios took their seats in the row directly behind us.

Richard Vance, who had been standing near the altar waiting to give away his daughter, stared at the men behind us. When his eyes landed on Special Agent Marcus Vance, his smug expression shattered. A look of sheer, unadulterated panic flashed across his face.

The music faltered, the quartet scrambling to find their rhythm again. Moments later, the heavy doors opened once more, and Chloe Vance stepped into the sanctuary on the arm of her uncle, her grand entrance completely overshadowed by the tense, suffocating drama that had just unfolded in the front pews.

As Chloe walked down the aisle, her eyes weren't focused on Lucas. She was staring at Alexander and me, picking up on the terrifying shift in the room's atmosphere.

The ceremony proceeded, but nobody was listening to the minister's words about eternal love and devotion. Every pair of eyes in that room remained glued to the back of my uniform and the three shining stars on my husband’s shoulders. The trap had been set, and the Carter family was blindly walking right into the center of it.
