Chapter 6 - An Unexpected Proposal

Richard collapsed onto the stone steps leading up to his front porch, completely broken. The sheriff’s deputies finished filing their reports, handing Richard a stack of citations that would require mandatory court appearances. The code enforcement officers placed bright orange ""Stop Work"" and ""Violation"" stickers directly across his front gate. The grand spectacle of his untouchable empire had disintegrated before the entire neighborhood.
Marcus turned his back on Richard, completely finished with the man, and walked across the asphalt toward my driveway. My little brothers, Leo and Toby, had finally gathered the courage to walk out onto the porch, clutching my hands tightly on either side.
""Are you the man who drives the giant truck?"" Toby asked in awe, staring up at the towering eighteen-wheeler.
Marcus’s stern, intimidating expression softened completely. The cold billionaire disappeared, replaced by a warm, grandfatherly smile that made my eyes sting with unexpected tears. ""I am indeed, young man. And that truck has a very important delivery today.""
""Mr. Sterling,"" I began, my voice choked with emotion. ""I don't even know what to say. You didn't have to do all this. You destroyed your own vehicle just to teach him a lesson...""
""Destroyed?"" Marcus laughed softly, waving a hand dismissively. ""That flatbed is an decommissioned transport chassis scheduled for scrap metal recycling tomorrow morning. I bought it back from the yard for five thousand dollars just to drive it over here myself. As for the damage to his car? My legal team will tie him up in civil litigation for the next decade. He won't see a single cent of insurance money.""
He knelt down so he was eye-level with Leo and Toby. ""Your father was a brother to me, boys. When my company was on the verge of bankruptcy years ago, when everyone else walked away, your dad worked eighty-hour weeks to make sure our cargo made it to port. He refused a bonus because he said friends help friends without asking for a price. I swore to him before he died that I would ensure his family was protected.""
Marcus stood back up and looked at me. ""Maya, you’ve been fighting an impossible battle all by yourself. Raising two boys, working minimum-wage logistics shifts, and taking abuse from bottom-feeders like Richard Vance. Your father would be immensely proud of your strength, but you don't have to carry this mountain alone anymore.""
""I just wanted our lives to be normal,"" I whispered, wiping away a stray tear. ""I just wanted to be able to get to work tomorrow.""
""You won't be going back to that warehouse tomorrow,"" Marcus said firmly.
My heart skipped a beat. ""What? Sir, I need that job. It’s the only income we have—""
""You won't be going back because tomorrow morning, you are starting your training as the assistant operations director at Sterling Logistics' regional branch,"" Marcus announced. ""The position comes with a full salary, complete family health benefits, and a guaranteed educational trust fund for both Leo and Toby that covers their college tuition in full.""
I stood there, frozen, unable to process the magnitude of what he was offering. ""Mr. Sterling... I don't have a degree. I only know how to drive a forklift and pack crates.""
May you like
""You have your father's blood, your father's work ethic, and a spine made of forged steel,"" Marcus countered. ""I can teach anyone how to read an inventory manifest. I cannot teach integrity. The job is yours, Maya. If you'll have it.""
Before I could answer, a loud, deep engine rumbled down the street. It wasn't another truck. It was a brand-new, metallic-blue SUV, pristine and shining in the late afternoon sun, pulling up right alongside my wrecked Toyota.
