Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Enforcer

The silence that followed the collision was suffocating, broken only by the hysterical wailing of Richard’s car alarm. Dust and powdered concrete drifted through the warm afternoon air like toxic snow. Richard remained frozen on the asphalt, his jaw slack, staring at what used to be a two-hundred-thousand-dollar imported machine. The entire roof had been sheared off, and the engine block was smashed backward into the leather passenger seats. His immaculate flowerbeds and Italian marble fountain were reduced to powdered rubble.

Tyler sprinted out from the front porch, screaming at the top of his lungs. ""Dad! Dad, your car! The monster truck smashed it!""

Richard didn't answer his son. He was gasping for air, looking as if his soul had been sucked out through his teeth. ""No... no, no, no! My limited edition... that was one of fifty in the entire country!"" He staggered to his feet, rage suddenly overcoming his shock. He whipped around, glaring at the flatbed rig, his fists shaking violently. ""Who did this?! I will ruin you! I will take everything you own, your house, your commercial license, your entire pathetic bloodline!""

The man who had stepped down from the cab didn't flinch. In fact, he didn't even look hurried. He was well into his late fifties, broad-shouldered, with steel-gray hair cut in a tight military fade and piercing blue eyes that radiated absolute authority. He adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke navy blazer, completely ignoring Richard’s screaming, and took off his leather driving gloves.

Behind him, another vehicle pulled up to the curb—a sleek black SUV with tinted windows. Two men in dark suits stepped out, holding digital tablets and heavy-duty clipboards.

""You deaf idiot!"" Richard roared, charging toward the silver-haired man. ""Did you hear me? You just destroyed private property! Do you have any idea who I am? I am Richard Vance! I sit on the municipal zoning board! You will rot in prison for this reckless stunt!""

The older man finally turned his gaze toward Richard. It was a look of cold, calculating disdain, the way an apex predator looks at a noisy insect.

""Richard Vance,"" the man spoke, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely composed. ""CEO of Vance Horizon Developments. You own a forty-percent stake in local commercial tracts, though sixty percent of your current projects are leveraged on high-interest municipal bonds that default at the end of the fiscal quarter. Did I leave anything out?""

Richard froze mid-stride, his face draining of all color. His aggressive posture collapsed instantly. ""Who... who are you? How do you know my portfolio?""

""My name is Marcus Sterling,"" the man said simply, taking a gold pen from his inner jacket pocket.

The name hit the street like a second freight train. Even I recognized it from the financial news broadcasts my late father used to watch every morning. Sterling Logistics and Asset Management. The company didn't just move freight; they owned shipping lanes, funded infrastructure projects, and held the underlying debt on nearly every major real estate developer in the state.

""Mr... Mr. Sterling?"" Richard stuttered, his voice jumping an entire octave. ""Why... why were you behind the wheel of a commercial rig? That makes no sense! And why did you drive straight into my driveway?!""

""A mechanical failure in the pneumatic brake line,"" Marcus replied smoothly, without an ounce of remorse. ""These transport vehicles are exceptionally heavy, Richard. Sometimes, when a heavy object is set in motion down a steep hill, physics takes over. Isn't that right, young man?""

Marcus turned his gaze toward Tyler, who was hiding behind his father's leg, suddenly terrified.

""Accidents happen, don't they?"" Marcus continued, his eyes locking onto Richard with chilling precision. ""Kids play with toys, brakes fail, cars get smashed. As a wealthy man, you surely understand that material things are trivial. Just buy another one, Richard. That sounds like your problem.""

My heart leaped into my throat. Marcus had just repeated the exact words Richard had spat at me only three minutes earlier. Every word, every syllable, delivered with surgical mockery. Richard stood there, trembling, realizing for the first time that the man who had just crushed his dream car held his entire financial life in the palm of his hand.
