Chapter 3 - The Secret Debt

Richard looked between his mangled sports car and Marcus Sterling, his chest heaving with shallow breaths. Sweat was pouring down his forehead, ruining his expensive haircut. ""Mr. Sterling, please... we have business together. The Oakridge expansion project... your investment firm was supposed to approve our sixty-million-dollar bridge loan tomorrow morning. You can't just wreck my property and mock me in front of my neighbors!""

""The loan?"" Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that sent chills down the quiet street. ""Richard, the loan was dead thirty minutes ago. The moment my compliance team pulled the complete records on your property management history, your credit integrity evaporated.""

Richard's eyes darted frantically. ""What are you talking about? My record is spotless! I run this neighborhood association with an iron fist! Ask anyone!""

""That is precisely the problem,"" Marcus said, motioning to one of his aides in the dark suits. The aide stepped forward, handing Marcus a thick, leather-bound folder.

Marcus flipped through the pages without looking at Richard. ""Let's review the ledger, shall we? Three years ago, when Thomas and Sarah Miller passed away in a tragic interstate collision, their eldest daughter took legal custody of her two minor siblings. She refused to sell this modest family home to your development firm, which wanted to raze the entire block to construct luxury condominiums. Is that accurate, Miss Miller?""

Marcus suddenly turned his piercing blue eyes toward me. I stood on my small wooden porch, stunned into silence. My little brothers, ten-year-old Toby and eight-year-old Leo, had peeked out from behind the screen door, their big eyes wide with wonder at the massive truck parked across the street.

""Yes, sir,"" I managed to say, my voice cracking slightly. ""He offered us pennies for our parents' house. When I said no, he swore he would make our lives miserable until we were forced to foreclose.""

""And so he did,"" Marcus read from the file. ""Fictitious HOA violations. Fabricated fines for unkempt grass, noise complaints that never occurred, and systematic harassment. Then, we have the past six weeks: shattered windows, vandalized property, and today, an deliberate vehicular collision executed by a minor operating an unlicensed high-powered motorized kart on public easements.""

""Those are childish pranks!"" Richard shouted defensively, though his confidence was completely shattered. ""You can't bring family disputes into an institutional financial audit! That is unethical!""

""Unethical?"" Marcus closed the folder with a sharp snap that echoed like a gunshot. ""Richard, my company does not finance cowards who bully orphaned children to steal their land. But more importantly, you seem to have forgotten who Thomas Miller was.""

At the mention of my father's name, Richard blinked, a sudden look of sheer terror flashing across his features. ""Thomas? He was just a warehouse supervisor! He was nobody!""

""Thomas Miller was the chief logistics coordinator who saved my entire overseas supply chain during the 2008 recession,"" Marcus said, stepping closer until he towered over Richard. ""He worked for my father for fifteen years. When he left to raise his family in peace, he left with my family's eternal gratitude and an open line of credit that he was too proud to ever cash in. When he died, I promised myself I would look after his children if they ever needed help.""

Marcus turned around and pointed directly at my crushed Toyota. ""And today, Richard, they needed help. I drove this truck myself from the regional depot because I wanted to see with my own eyes what kind of man had been terrorizing Thomas's girl.""

Richard began to hyperventilate. ""You... you crashed your own company truck on purpose?!""

""I told you, Richard,"" Marcus replied with a thin, icy smile. ""The brakes failed. And right now, your entire financial empire is suffering from the exact same failure.""
