Chapter 4 - The Legal Hammer Drops

Before Richard could formulate another pathetic excuse, a fleet of three patrol cruisers from the county sheriff's department rounded the corner, their red and blue lights flashing frantically. Following close behind was a city code enforcement vehicle. The quiet cul-de-sac had officially turned into a high-stakes crime scene.
Richard visibly brightened when he saw the lead cruiser. ""Sheriff Barnes! Thank God you're here!"" he yelled, waving his arms dramatically. ""Look at what this maniac did! He drove an unregistered commercial vehicle into a residential zone and demolished my car! Arrest him immediately!""
A burly sheriff with a gray mustache stepped out of the patrol car. He didn't look at Richard’s ruined sports car. Instead, he walked straight past Richard and offered a crisp, respectful nod to Marcus Sterling.
""Afternoon, Mr. Sterling. We received your dispatch call and the surveillance footage from Miss Miller’s security system,"" Sheriff Barnes stated, pulling out a small digital tablet.
""Surveillance footage?"" Richard whispered, turning slowly toward my house.
I pointed up toward the eaves of our small front porch. There, nestled right beneath the wooden gutter, was a small, high-definition camera blinking with a steady green light. It was a cheap unit I had installed myself after Tyler smashed our front window with that baseball.
""Every single interaction, Richard,"" I said, stepping off the porch and walking toward the street. ""Every time your son threw rocks at our house. Every time he rode his electric kart across my mother’s hydrangeas. And especially today, when your boy looked directly at my car, aimed his steering wheel, accelerated, and yelled, 'Eat dirt, poor girl!' before slamming into my bumper.""
Sheriff Barnes tapped the tablet screen, turning it toward Richard. The audio was crystal clear. Tyler’s arrogant laugh, the loud crunch of metal, Richard’s arrogant refusal to pay, and every disgusting word he had spat at me about my deceased parents and my financial struggles.
""Tyler is a minor!"" Richard screamed frantically, trying to grab his son's arm. ""You can't charge a child!""
""We aren't charging the child with grand reckless endangerment, Mr. Vance,"" the Sheriff said grimly. ""We are charging you. As the legal guardian who purchased an off-road utility vehicle with modified speed governor exceeding forty miles per hour and permitted an unlicensed minor to operate it on public streets without supervision. That's a class three misdemeanor right off the bat.""
""A misdemeanor? I can pay a fine!"" Richard spat.
""Not just that, Mr. Vance,"" the code enforcement officer interrupted, stepping out of the second vehicle holding a thick stack of printed notices. ""We've also received an anonymous audit request regarding your residential permits. This circular driveway you poured last summer? It encroaches four feet onto county utility easements. The stone fountain that was just destroyed? Built without an environmental water permit. And your unpermitted three-car garage extension violates local fire safety codes.""
Richard looked like he was about to have a stroke. ""This is absurd! I am the head of the zoning committee!""
May you like
""Not anymore,"" a woman's voice rang out from the sidewalk. It was Mrs. Gable, the neighborhood association treasurer, who had walked over with several other neighbors who had long suffered under Richard's tyrannical rule. ""The board held an emergency digital meeting ten minutes ago after reviewing Miss Miller’s uploaded footage. You have been unanimously stripped of your presidency, Richard. And we are initiating a full independent audit of the association funds you’ve been managing for the past five years.""
Richard stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he landed hard on his ruined lawn, surrounded by dirt, broken stones, and the wreckage of his pride.
