Chapter 6 - Alone in the Delivery Room

At Mount Grace Medical Center, the small hands of the wall clock ticked past 9:00 p.m. Inside room 412, the fierce struggle of labor had given way to an exhausting, quiet stillness. Camille Reed lay back against the pillows, her face pale and damp with sweat, holding a seven-pound, six-ounce baby boy wrapped in a striped flannel blanket. The baby had a shock of dark hair and clear, blinking blue eyes that stared up at her with complete, unblemished innocence. Nurse Chen sat quietly on a stool near the bassinet, writing notes into the electronic chart while a pediatric resident finished checking the infant's vital signs. ""He's completely healthy, Camille,"" the resident said softly, offering a kind smile. ""Strong lungs, excellent reflexes. You did a wonderful job.""
Camille looked down at the child, her chest aching with a complex mixture of unconditional maternal love and sharp, searing shame. The birth certificate worksheet sat on the rolling bedside tray, completely blank where the father's name and social security number were supposed to be entered. Adrian had never returned. He hadn't called, hadn't sent flowers, and hadn't dispatched a car to check on her. In the final hours of her pushing, while she had screamed until her throat was raw, the only hands holding hers had belonged to two hospital nurses working an overtime shift. The fantasy of being the pampered, wealthy wife of a Manhattan real estate titan had disintegrated into the cold reality of a single mother holding an infant in an unpaid private hospital room.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Camille's heart skipped a beat, a desperate, irrational flicker of hope whispering that Adrian had finally come to his senses. But the door opened to reveal not Adrian, but a polished woman in a navy business suit carrying a leather briefcase. ""Ms. Reed?"" the woman inquired politely, stepping into the room with professional composure. ""My name is Claire Underwood. I am an associate with Vance & Sterling, representing Elena Sterling."" Camille instinctively pulled the baby closer to her chest, her jaw tightening defensively. ""Did she send you here to mock me? To kick me out of the hospital? I don't have anywhere to go tonight.""
The attorney shook her head gently, taking a seat in the visitor's chair Adrian had vacated hours earlier. ""On the contrary, Ms. Sterling instructed us to settle your private hospital bill in full, including your post-natal care and three months of pediatric home visits."" Camille blinked, stunned into silence. ""Why? After everything I did... after everything I said to her?"" Claire opened her briefcase and produced a single, neatly typed document. ""Elena made it clear that a child should never pay for the sins of its parents. However, she also instructed me to inform you that the Tribeca penthouse is owned by Sterling Aurora and must be vacated by the end of the month. Furthermore, Adrian Cross has been formally terminated and is facing criminal referrals for corporate embezzlement. If you intend to seek child support, you should hire an attorney immediately, though based on our financial forensic audit, Adrian currently has a negative net worth."" Camille looked down at the sleeping baby, a single tear falling onto his cheek as she realized that the only mercy she had received all night had come from the very woman she had tried so hard to destroy.
