Chapter 3 - The Highway Chase

Adrian Cross slammed his palms against the leather steering wheel of his Porsche Cayenne, letting out a raw, guttural roar that startled the driver of an idling taxi beside him. The Van Wyck Expressway was a parking lot of glowing red brake lights, glistening beneath a relentless sheet of torrential rain. It was 4:45 p.m., peak Friday rush hour, and the digital clock on the dashboard seemed to tick forward with mocking velocity. Every minute that ticked by brought Elena closer to the scheduled departure of Flight 108 to Zurich. He reached over to plug his phone into the charging cable, his hands shaking so violently that he dropped the cord twice onto the floor mat before jamming it into the port.
The screen flickered to life, immediately bombarding him with a wall of notifications that made the blood drain from his face. There were sixteen missed calls from Julian Vance, the senior managing partner at Vance & Sterling, followed by seven urgent emails from the board of directors. He tapped the top email with a trembling thumb. It was an automated notification from the Sterling Aurora internal IT security division: ""Notice of Immediate Administrative Revocation. Your credentials, corporate single sign-on, and facility access cards have been deactivated by order of the Executive Committee."" He swallowed hard, a sour wave of bile rising in his throat. This had to be a technical error. Elena wouldn't dare humiliate him this publicly. He was the public face of the firm; he gave the keynote speeches; he handled the press.
He tapped Julian Vance’s number, holding the phone against his ear while aggressively riding the bumper of a delivery van in the crawling left lane. ""Julian, thank God you picked up,"" Adrian blurted the moment the line clicked open. ""Listen to me, whatever Elena posted is a private domestic misunderstanding. We had an argument this morning, and she reacted impulsively. I'm on my way to JFK right now to straighten this out before she leaves for the Zurich meetings. Tell the board to hold any statements.""

Julian’s voice on the other end was icy, devoid of the deferential warmth he usually reserved for Elena’s husband. ""Adrian, I suggest you pull over before you cause an accident. The board is not waiting for your explanation because the board already convened an emergency executive session at three o'clock."" Adrian felt the air leave his lungs. ""What are you talking about? I'm the vice president of global development! I chair the executive committee!"" Julian let out a short, pitying sigh. ""You were a consultant on an annual discretionary contract, Adrian. A contract that expired at midnight yesterday and required Elena’s personal signature to renew. She did not sign it. Furthermore, the audit committee just received four thick folders containing your private leasing agreements in Tribeca, your personal expenses billed under project contingency funds, and wire transfers sent to a dummy LLC in Delaware. The legal department is already drafting the civil suit.""
""Julian, wait! That's not what happened! Elena is orchestrating this out of jealousy!"" Adrian screamed into the phone, slamming on his brakes as traffic ground to a dead stop beneath an overpass. ""Elena didn't orchestrate your fraud, Adrian; you documented it yourself on company servers,"" Julian replied coldly. ""You have twenty-four hours to vacate the corporate apartment before security rekeys the locks. Do not contact any member of the board."" The line went dead. Adrian stared blankly through the windshield wipers as they swept across the glass, realizing with sickening clarity that the life he had constructed was collapsing around him like a house of cards in a gale.
