Chapter 4 - Above the Atlantic

At thirty-eight thousand feet, the cabin of the Swiss International Air lines Boeing 777 was wrapped in a soothing mantle of silence. Elena sat in the front row of the first-class cabin, a glass of sparkling water resting on the linen-draped tray table beside her laptop. Down below, the dark, turbulent expanse of the North Atlantic stretched out under a blanket of silver clouds, completely disconnected from the chaos unfolding six miles beneath her. For the first time in nearly four years, her shoulders were not locked in defensive tension. The suffocating weight that had pressed against her chest ever since she began noticing Adrian’s subtle lies—the lingering scent of foreign perfume on his jackets, the unexplained business trips to Miami, the condescending smirks when she offered strategic input—had finally lifted.
She opened a secure encrypted folder labeled ""Sterling Transition 2026."" Inside were the detailed minutes of the secret board meeting she had conducted via secure video conference two weeks prior. Her father, Thomas Sterling, had spent forty years building Sterling Aurora from a boutique regional developer into an international titan. On his deathbed, he had held Elena’s hand and cautioned her with haunting precision: ""Adrian has charm, my dear, but charm is the counterfeit currency of ambition. Never confuse a man who loves your reflection with a man who loves you. Keep the voting shares in the private trust."" At the time, blinded by grief and five years of marriage, Elena had thought her father was being overly cynical. Now, she thanked God for his uncompromising foresight.

Her laptop connected to the high-speed satellite Wi-Fi, and a message notification popped up from Julian Vance: ""The board has unanimously ratified your assumption of the executive chairmanship. Adrian attempted to call me twenty minutes ago from the highway. He sounded completely unhinged. I informed him of the impending civil filings and the lease termination. New York media outlets are running the story as the lead headline on their morning business pages."" Attached to the message were screenshots from major financial portals: ""Sterling Aurora Heiress Files for Divorce, Purges Executive Board,"" and ""The Fall of Adrian Cross: Vanity, Betrayal, and the Lost Fortune.""
Elena read through the articles without a trace of vindictive triumph. Revenge was an exhausting, toxic pursuit that kept a person chained to the very monster they wished to escape. What she felt instead was an overwhelming sense of liberation. She had endured the quiet agony of an empty marriage for years, continually making excuses for Adrian’s coldness, wondering if her inability to carry a child to term had driven him away. But seeing Camille's photograph had shattered that lingering self-doubt. Adrian's betrayal had nothing to do with her flaws; it was simply the inevitable manifestation of his hollow, insatiable greed. She closed the laptop, reclined her leather seat into a full lie-flat bed, and closed her eyes, letting the steady hum of the jet engines carry her toward a clean slate.
