Chapter 2 - The Empty Suite

Back at Mount Grace Medical Center, room 412 smelled of sterile antiseptic, discarded paper gowns, and cooling takeout coffee. Outside the door, nurses hurried past with trays of supplies, speaking in hushed, urgent tones about the handsome gentleman in the bespoke charcoal suit who had shoved past two security guards near the elevators. Camille lay flat against the elevated hospital bed, her knuckles white as another crushing contraction ripped through her lower abdomen. Tears of anger and humiliation tracked hot lines down her cheeks, smearing the mascara she had carefully applied earlier that morning so she would look radiant in their first family portrait. The portrait that was supposed to prove she had finally displaced Elena Sterling once and for all.

""Breathe, Camille, deep breaths through your nose,"" ordered Sarah Chen, the veteran labor nurse who had stepped into the room after witnessing Adrian's theatrical exit. Sarah gently placed a monitoring band around Camille's swollen stomach, her eyes flickering with quiet pity. Medical professionals in Manhattan private hospitals had seen plenty of family drama, but watching a man sprint out of a delivery room while his partner screamed his name was a rare level of cowardice. ""Where is he?"" Camille gasped, her voice cracking as the contraction peaked. ""Call him again. He has his black coat... he took his car keys from the table. Why isn't he answering?""

""Honey, your blood pressure is spiking, and the baby’s heart rate is elevated,"" Nurse Chen said firmly, adjusting the IV line taped to Camille’s wrist. ""Right now, your only job is delivering a healthy boy. You cannot control what is happening outside these walls. Focus on your breathing."" But Camille couldn't focus. Her phone lay on the white sheets, the screen illuminated with the viral post that was currently tearing through New York society. The image of Elena's ringless hand had already accumulated forty thousand likes and hundreds of reposts across industry circles. Financial commentators were already speculating whether the abrupt separation would affect Sterling Aurora’s upcoming merger with the Swiss consortium. Elena hadn’t merely left Adrian; she had dismantled his professional credibility in broad daylight with a single tap of her thumb.

Camille recalled the text messages she had sent Elena over the preceding months—anonymous hints dropped with surgical malice, untraceable deliveries sent to the penthouse with notes about late-night dinners, and finally, the blatant hospital photograph. She had convinced herself that Adrian stayed with Elena solely out of pity, that Elena was an emotionless corporate shell who cared only about spreadsheets and balance sheets. Adrian had fed her that exact narrative every night in the Tribeca apartment, whispering that he was the real visionary behind the Sterling empire and that Elena was merely the daughter who inherited the name. ""As soon as the new funding round clears,"" Adrian had promised, kissing her forehead, ""I’ll file the papers. You and the baby will have everything.""

Now, staring at the blank hospital ceiling, the bitter reality settled into Camille's chest like lead. Adrian hadn't built Sterling Aurora; he had merely been riding its coat-tails. And the moment Elena decided to cut the tether, Adrian hadn't paused for a second to hold his newborn child. He hadn't asked if Camille needed medication, hadn't waited to hear the baby’s heartbeat, and hadn't cared that she was facing the most vulnerable hours of her life completely alone. When the next contraction struck, tearing a jagged cry from her throat, Camille reached out to grasp the cold chrome bedrail instead of the warm hand she had traded her dignity to secure.
