Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Decade

Six months passed, and the courtroom of the New York Southern District was packed to maximum capacity. Media vans with satellite dishes stretched around three city blocks, and spectators had camped outside since dawn to catch a glimpse of the fallen tech prodigy.
Aaron Prescott looked unrecognizable. Gone were the tailored Italian suits, the slicked-back hair, and the smug, predatory smile. He sat at the defense table wearing a faded orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists bound by heavy iron chains. His hair was thin and disheveled, his face sunken, and his hands trembled uncontrollably every time a camera shutter snapped in the gallery.
Beside him sat his public defender, a young, exhausted attorney who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world. Eleanor sat in the row directly behind them, dressed in a cheap, off-the-rack cardigan, her hands nervously clutching a plastic rosary. She had aged twenty years in half a year, evicted from high society, forced to live in a dingy studio apartment funded by state emergency assistance.
The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and the entire room fell into reverent, pin-drop silence.
I walked down the center aisle, flanked by Julian and Marcus Sterling. I wore a tailored, midnight-blue bespoke suit, my diamond studs catching the fluorescent courtroom lighting, my head held high with effortless regal dignity. As I passed Aaron’s table, he whipped his head around, his bloodshot eyes pleading with frantic desperation.
""Alyssa..."" he rasped, his voice cracked and hollow. ""Please. Look at me. Please talk to the judge. Tell them it was all a family misunderstanding. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I'll be your dog, Alyssa. Just don't let them send me to federal prison!""
I didn't even turn my head. I looked straight ahead toward the judicial bench, treating his pathetic groveling as nothing more than an unpleasant draft of cold air.
Judge Evelyn Harrison slammed her gavel down with thunderous finality. ""The court will come to order! In the matter of the People versus Aaron Prescott, the jury has returned a verdict on all thirty-six counts of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and willful patent infringement.""
The jury foreperson stood up, a middle-aged woman with steel-rimmed glasses. She unfolded the verdict sheet and looked directly at Aaron.
""On count one, grand larceny in the first degree: Guilty.""
""On count two, securities fraud: Guilty.""
""On count three, criminal misappropriation of trade secrets: Guilty.""
""On count thirty-six, systemic corporate embezzlement: Guilty.""
With every repeated word, Eleanor let out a stifled sob, burying her face into her trembling hands. Aaron slumped backward into his chair, staring blankly at the ceiling as the reality of his total annihilation washed over him.
Judge Harrison adjusted her spectacles, her gaze landing heavily upon the disgraced former CEO.
""Mr. Prescott, in my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely encountered an individual so entirely consumed by arrogance, deceit, and unbridled greed. You took the unconditional love, technical genius, and financial trust of your spouse, and you repaid her with cruel humiliation, public mockery, and calculated betrayal. You built a glittering house of cards on stolen foundations, truly believing you were above the law.""
The judge cleared her throat, her voice ringing like a funeral bell throughout the courtroom.
""It is the sentence of this court that you serve twenty-five years at the United States Penitentiary, without the possibility of federal parole. Furthermore, an order of total restitution in the amount of two-point-one billion dollars is hereby granted to Vance Dynamic Innovations, alongside a permanent lifetime injunction barring you from ever serving as an officer, director, or consultant for any publicly traded or private commercial enterprise.""
The gavel slammed down: Bang! Bang! Bang!
May you like
""No! No, please! God, no!"" Aaron shrieked, breaking down into hysterical wails as federal marshals grabbed him under his arms and hauled him toward the side holding door. He kicked his legs against the carpet, his chains rattling violently. ""Alyssa! Save me! Tell them you forgive me! Alyssa!""
I remained seated, watching with cold, tranquil eyes as the metal security door slammed shut, sealing Aaron Prescott into the dark abyss he had dug with his own arrogant hands.
