Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage Crumbles

The shock that paralyzed Aaron’s face was intoxicating. For years, he had worn an untouchable smirk, treating everyone around him like stepping stones for his colossal ego. Now, he stood stranded in his own boardroom, his jaw slacked, staring at the termination papers as if they were written in ancient hieroglyphics.

""You can't do this to me,"" Aaron whispered, his voice trembling between frantic denial and bubbling panic. ""I am the company. The market knows my face. If you fire me, our stock will collapse into the floorboards before the opening bell tomorrow!""

""Let it drop,"" I replied, tilting my head with absolute composure. ""Vance Capital has enough liquidity to buy back every outstanding share at a fraction of the cost, take the company private, and rebrand it before lunchtime on Monday. You drastically overestimate your importance to Wall Street, Aaron. Investors don't care about your smile; they care about the code. And the code belongs entirely to me.""

Eleanor rushed forward, grabbing Aaron’s arm while glaring daggers into my soul. ""Don't listen to this conniving witch, Aaron! She’s bluffing! You still have your personal fortune! You still have the estate in the Hamptons, the penthouse on Fifth Avenue, the luxury fleet! We don't need these treacherous vipers!""

A low, collective chuckle echoed from the legal counsel seated behind Marcus.

""I'm afraid you are profoundly mistaken, Mrs. Prescott,"" Marcus Sterling interjected, sliding another crisp document across the table. ""The Hamptons estate, the Fifth Avenue triplex, and the six imported sports cars were all acquired using debt instruments secured directly by Mr. Prescott’s corporate stock holdings. Now that his equity has been liquidated under the default recovery provisions of Phoenix Capital, his collateral is completely wiped out.""

Aaron snatched the legal document, his eyes racing down the pages. With every sentence he read, his skin grew paler, shifting from pale white to a sickly gray. ""What is this? An asset freeze? A total lien?""

""Every bank account in your name, Aaron, has been placed under temporary judicial freeze pending the forensic audit of your corporate embezzlement,"" I explained gently, taking a step toward him. ""The penthouse you bought for Jasmine? Foreclosed this morning. The sports cars? Being loaded onto flatbed trailers as we speak. Even the very suit you are wearing was billed to a corporate expense account that has just been revoked.""

Jasmine let out a terrified wail from the corner. ""Mr. Prescott! What about my signing bonus? What about my signing bonus for the Miami project? My card was declined at the boutique an hour ago!""

""Shut up, Jasmine!"" Aaron snapped, his face contorting into ugly desperation. He turned back toward me, abandoning his previous arrogance, his hands reaching out across the table in an instinctive plea for mercy. ""Alyssa... baby, listen to me. Please. We can talk about this in private. We’re husband and wife! We took vows! What happened on the plane was just a misunderstanding! Jasmine was feeling sick, and I was stressed about the board meeting! You know I love you! You know everything I built was for our family!""

The utter audacity of his words hung in the air like thick, sulfurous smoke.

""For our family?"" I asked, my voice dropping to a whisper that commanded complete silence across the expansive room. ""When was the last time you remembered our wedding anniversary, Aaron? Was it when you were buying diamond bracelets for your previous intern in Paris? Or was it when you told your mother over Thanksgiving dinner that my family was too primitive to be invited to your high-society gala?""

Eleanor gasped, her eyes darting away in shame. She had assumed that conversation had remained strictly confidential inside her private salon. She didn't know that every room in the estate she lived in was maintained by staff who answered directly to the Vance Trust.

""I gave you five years of unconditional devotion,"" I continued, stepping around the table until I stood barely inches from his trembling frame. ""I gave you the genius that made you famous. I gave you the capital that made you rich. And in return, you gave my seat on my own plane to a woman who feeds you fruit like a trained pet.""

""Alyssa, please..."" A single tear escaped Aaron’s eye, a tear born of pure terror and wounded vanity. ""Don't destroy me. Give me one more chance. We can start over. I'll fire Jasmine right now! On the spot! Jasmine, get out! You're fired!""

Jasmine gasped, horrified, but nobody paid her any attention.

""You're not starting over with me, Aaron,"" I said, leaning down so only he could hear the final nail entering his coffin. ""Because you are no longer worthy of even standing in my shadow. Security, remove these trespassers.""

Frank stepped forward, joined by three burly guards. They grabbed Aaron by the elbows, lifting him off his feet as he began to kick and scream like a cornered child. Eleanor shrieked in outrage as she was firmly escorted down the executive hallway, her designer shoes scuffing against the polished marble floor.

As the elevator doors closed on Aaron’s frantic, desperate pleas, I turned back to the remaining board members.

""Gentlemen,"" I announced, taking my rightful seat at the head of the empire. ""Let us begin the restructuring.""
