Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

Three hours after being forcefully evicted from the private airstrip, Aaron burst through the glass double doors of the Prescott Dynamics corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. He looked completely unhinged; his necktie was loosened, sweat beaded across his forehead, and his mother was trailing behind him, clutching her designer handbag like a weapon. Jasmine scampered after them, nervously clutching her tablet, which was pinging relentlessly with urgent calendar cancellations.
""Get Arthur Vance—I mean, get our corporate legal team into the main boardroom right this second!"" Aaron bellowed across the executive floor. Receptionists and junior analysts froze in terror, ducking into their cubicles as their CEO stormed toward the boardroom.
Aaron threw open the heavy oak doors, fully expecting to rally his compliant board of directors to issue an emergency lawsuit against Vance Aerospace. Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks.
The boardroom was already packed. Every single majority shareholder, venture capitalist, and outside investor was seated around the forty-foot mahogany table. But the executive leather chair at the head of the table—Aaron’s personal, custom-made throne—was not empty.
I sat there, sipping an Earl Grey tea from an antique porcelain cup. To my right sat Marcus Sterling, alongside two forensic accountants who were flipping through towering stacks of red-labeled audit folders.
""Alyssa?"" Aaron choked, his voice cracking with a toxic blend of rage and disbelief. ""What are you doing in my chair? Security! Why are these people on my executive floor? Escort my wife out of this building immediately!""
Nobody moved. The head of building security, an ex-Secret Service operative named Frank, remained standing at attention near the doorway, his hands folded neatly in front of his suit. Frank didn't even blink.
""Frank, didn't you hear me?"" Aaron screamed, slamming his palms onto the mahogany table. ""I am the founder and Chief Executive Officer of this company! I pay your firm's retainer!""
""Actually, Aaron,"" I spoke, setting my teacup down onto the saucer with a soft, melodic clink that resonated across the silent room. ""Frank is employed by Vance Sentinel Security, a direct subsidiary of my family's private estate. Just like the commercial lease for this seventy-story skyscraper, which happens to be owned by Vance Commercial Real Estate.""
Eleanor pushed her way to the front, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. ""You insolent, deceitful little girl! How dare you try to intimidate my son! Aaron built this software from the dirt while you spent his money on jewelry! Everything inside these walls is his intellectual property! We will sue you until you don't have a penny left for bread!""
Marcus Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. He opened a heavy leather binder and placed several notarized, blue-ribboned legal documents directly before Aaron.
""Mrs. Prescott senior, I suggest you refrain from making defamatory remarks that could worsen your son's legal liability,"" Marcus said coldly. ""Mr. Prescott, as you are well aware, five years ago, Prescott Dynamics accepted a one-point-five-billion-dollar structural convertible bond from an anonymous institutional entity known as the Phoenix Capital Reserve.""
Aaron blinked, the color slowly draining from his sun-tanned cheeks. ""Yes... Phoenix Capital. An overseas consortium. What does that have to do with Alyssa?""
""I am Phoenix Capital, Aaron,"" I said, meeting his eyes with deadpan calm. ""I have always been Phoenix Capital. When you fell to your knees in our tiny studio apartment crying that the venture funds were going to liquidate your server racks, I didn't just give you my love. I gave you my inheritance. But unlike you, Aaron, my family's financial trustees do not distribute charitable gifts without bulletproof covenants.""
Marcus flipped the page, pointing to a highlighted clause bearing Aaron’s frantic signature from five years ago.
""Clause 14B,"" Marcus read aloud, his voice booming with authority. ""In the event of uncurable personal fraud, public reputational endangerment, or executive breach of corporate ethics, Phoenix Capital holds the immediate, unilateral right to call the convertible debt into controlling super-voting equity at a ratio of ten-to-one.""
""Personal fraud?"" Aaron sputtered, sweating profusely. ""I have committed no fraud! This company is solvent! We are preparing for the multi-billion-dollar government contract in Geneva!""
""You used corporate funds to purchase a three-million-dollar penthouse in Miami last Thursday, registered under the name of Miss Jasmine Miller,"" I said, sliding a dossier across the polished table. ""You funneled corporate research grants to pay for your mother’s luxury European vacations. And most crucially, Aaron, you violated the core licensing terms of the thirteen foundational patents that operate your AI architecture.""
Aaron’s eyes darted frantically around the table. He looked at Jonathan Hayes, the lead institutional investor who had backed him since the beginning. ""Jonathan! Say something! You can't let this happen! I'm the brain! I'm the face of Prescott Dynamics!""
Jonathan Hayes took off his glasses, looked at Aaron with profound disgust, and shook his head. ""Aaron, you're not the brain. We just discovered twenty minutes ago that every algorithm update for the past three years was pushed from an encrypted terminal registered to your wife's private office. You were never the genius. You were just the salesman.""
""No... no, this is a coup! This is illegal!"" Aaron roared, his voice bouncing off the acoustic walls.
May you like
""It is entirely legal, Mr. Prescott,"" Marcus replied with surgical coolness. ""The board of directors convened thirty minutes ago in an emergency extraordinary session. By a unanimous vote of ninety-two percent of voting shares, your position as Chief Executive Officer has been terminated, effective immediately.""
I stood up slowly, smoothing the wrinkles from my skirt. ""Pack your personal things, Aaron. Before five o'clock. If Jasmine wants to help you carry your cardboard boxes, she is welcome to do so. After all, she is so very fond of working late hours for you.""
