Chapter 2 - Grounded at the Gate

Inside the cabin, Aaron was already uncorking a vintage bottle of Dom Pérignon, clearly reveling in his perceived dominance. Jasmine clapped her manicured hands like an excited schoolgirl, raising an empty crystal flute toward his face.

""You really showed her who the boss is, Aaron,"" Eleanor remarked smugly, adjusting her diamond-encrusted brooch. ""She acts as though your success is something she can dictate. A woman must understand when she is outranked.""

""Alyssa has grown far too comfortable,"" Aaron declared, preening under the adulation of his sycophantic executives. ""She forgets that without my name, she is just another aimless socialite. A little humility in the terminal will do her good. Captain! Shut the doors! We have a multi-million-dollar presentation in Aspen to attend!""

The heavy hydraulic jet bridge began to hum, but instead of the door sealing shut, the auxiliary power units abruptly whined down into an eerie silence. The cabin lights flickered twice before dropping to dim emergency amber. The air conditioning vents ceased their steady hiss of cool air, leaving the cabin immediately stifling.

Seconds later, Captain Miller marched back up the carpeted airstair, flanked by two heavily armed federal aviation security officers and the airport's regional ground director.

""What is the meaning of this disruption, Miller?"" Aaron barked, rising from his seat with an irritated frown. ""Why have the engines stopped? We have an assigned departure window, and every second we sit on this tarmac costs my company ten thousand dollars!""

Captain Miller did not look intimidated. His posture was rigid, his expression grim. ""Mr. Prescott, I must order you, your mother, and all corporate personnel to gather your personal belongings and vacate the cabin immediately.""

A stunned silence smothered the luxury cabin. Jasmine dropped her champagne glass, splashing sparkling wine across Aaron’s bespoke trousers.

""Excuse me?"" Aaron scoffed, his face flushing crimson. ""Have you lost your mind? Do you know who I am? I am Aaron Prescott! I chartered this private charter configuration for a corporate retreat! I pay your salary!""

""Actually, sir, you do not,"" Captain Miller answered with biting professional precision. ""This aircraft is not a public charter. It is the private flagship vessel of the Vance Global Aerospace Corporation. Our employment contracts, our fuel subsidies, and the civil aviation operating licenses are signed exclusively by Madam Chairwoman Vance. And she has formally revoked your boarding privileges.""

""Madam Chairwoman Vance?"" Aaron’s brows furrowed in genuine confusion. ""Who the hell is that? What does that have to do with my flight?""

""He’s talking about Alyssa, you idiot,"" Eleanor gasped suddenly, her aristocratic facade cracking as she pointed out the oval cabin window.

Aaron pressed his face against the double-paned glass, his breath fogging the surface. Below on the tarmac, parked next to the airstair, was a motorcade of three obsidian-black Rolls-Royce Phantoms, surrounded by six armed personal bodyguards in crisp black suits.

Standing in the center, wrapped in an exquisite white cashmere trench coat, was me. Beside me stood Marcus Sterling, the legendary managing partner of the world's most terrifying corporate litigation firm.

Aaron watched in sheer disbelief as the airport’s regional port director approached me, bowed with deferential respect, and handed me an electronic clipboard. I signed it without even breaking stride, then glanced upward toward the cockpit window and waved a solitary, indifferent goodbye.

""That's impossible..."" Aaron muttered, his hands trembling as he gripped the armrests. ""Alyssa is an orphan from upstate. Her parents were simple antique dealers...""

""Mr. Prescott,"" Captain Miller’s voice cut through his delusion like a scalpel. ""The Vance Trust has managed international maritime and sovereign wealth funds for four generations. Your wife is the sole surviving heir to the Vance dynasty. And on her explicit instruction, the Prescott Dynamics corporate flight clearance has been permanently terminated. If you and your staff do not disembark within ninety seconds, federal marshals will remove you in handcuffs for trespassing on private property.""

Whispers erupted among the senior vice presidents. Several board members began frantically checking their mobile devices. Jasmine turned pale, shrinking back into the seat cushions as the reality of the situation washed over her like an icy tidal wave.

Aaron was practically pushed down the metal stairs into the blustery wind, his expensive suit rumpled, his mother clutching his arm in hysterical rage. He reached the tarmac just as the lead Rolls-Royce purred into gear.

""Alyssa!"" Aaron screamed across the security barricade, his aristocratic composure utterly shattered. ""Alyssa, stop! What is the meaning of this childish stunt? Pick up your phone!""

I rolled down the tinted rear window just two inches, looking at him through dark designer lenses.

May you like

""Have a lovely commercial flight, Aaron,"" I said calmly. ""Row thirty-four, middle seat, suits you much better.""

With that, the glass slid up, and the motorcade vanished into the private terminal tunnel, leaving Aaron Prescott stranded in the dust of his own shattered vanity.
