Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Claire looked at the man she had loved for nearly a decade. She searched inside herself for the burning anger that had consumed her on Saturday night, or the paralyzing grief that had threatened to crush her chest when he laughed at Vanessa's cruel joke.

She felt nothing.

Not hatred. Not revenge. Only an immense, liberating indifference.

""You don't want to come home to me, Daniel,"" Claire said, her voice quiet and clear. ""You want to come home to the safety I provided. You want your status back. You want your credit cards, your private flights, and your polished reputation. You never loved me. You loved what being married to me allowed you to become.""

""That's not true!"" Daniel dropped to his knees right there on the polished lobby granite, unconcerned with his dignity, grasping desperately toward her hem. ""Please, Claire! The federal prosecutors are opening an inquiry into my tax deductions! If you don't back me, I could face prison time! My family will be ruined!""

Arthur Pendelton stepped between Daniel and Claire, holding up a manila envelope.

""Mr. Cole,"" Arthur said with judicial severity. ""Attached here are the final settlement terms prepared by Mrs. Whitmore. She has agreed not to press criminal charges regarding your personal misappropriation of corporate expense accounts, provided you sign a complete waiver of all future claims against Cole Meridian and surrender your executive stock options.""

Daniel looked up, his face pale and wet with tears. ""And what do I get?""

""You get your freedom,"" Claire replied coldly. ""You get the two million dollars remaining in your father's original pension trust—money earned through his labor, not mine. You will leave Philadelphia. You will never contact me, my family, or this company again.""

""Two million?"" Daniel gasped. ""Claire, my debts alone are more than that! After taxes and legal fees, I’ll be left with nothing! I’ll have to work for someone else!""

""Then you will finally experience what millions of ordinary, hardworking people do every single day,"" Claire said. ""The very people you looked down upon while drinking champagne from crystal flutes.""

Claire turned toward the glass doors without waiting for his response. Her driver held the car door open.

As she stepped into the night, Daniel remained on his knees on the cold marble floor, weeping into his empty hands while the building security staff quietly closed the glass doors between them forever.
