Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vanessa

Vanessa’s voice turned shrill as panic stripped away her corporate polish. ""You can't fire me! I have an ironclad executive contract! I brought in the Pacific Harbor account! I have intellectual property rights to the entire rebranding campaign!""
Claire finally turned her gaze toward the woman who had smirked at her under the ballroom chandeliers forty-eight hours earlier. Her expression held no anger—only an icy, clinical pity that cut deeper than any insult.
""You brought in Pacific Harbor, Vanessa?"" Claire opened a slim manila folder in front of her. ""Or did you leak our competitive bidding structure to Pacific Harbor’s parent corporation three months ago to guarantee they would sign, while accepting an offshore consulting retainer from their secondary holding company in the Caymans?""
The color drained from Vanessa’s face until she looked like a ghost. She backed away from the boardroom table, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit.
""That's corporate espionage,"" whispered Marcus Vance, the COO, looking at Vanessa with disgust. ""That violates federal interstate commerce regulations.""
""My forensic accounting team spent the entire weekend combing through the private communication servers Daniel generously granted you access to,"" Claire said, sliding a duplicate packet to the representative from the Department of Justice’s regional oversight committee, who had been sitting quietly in the corner of the boardroom the entire time. ""Every text message, every deleted wire transfer, every dinner you charged to the corporate account while meeting with our competitors. It’s all documented, notarized, and submitted.""
Two corporate security guards, accompanied by two uniformed police officers, entered through the boardroom doors.
""Ms. Cole—or rather, Ms. Vance-Cole, as you liked to call yourself in private emails,"" the lead officer said, stepping toward Vanessa. ""You are under arrest for commercial fraud, grand larceny, and unlawful appropriation of corporate trade secrets.""
""Daniel! Do something!"" Vanessa shrieked, grabbing Daniel’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging into his cashmere sweater. ""Tell them it was your idea! You authorized those funds! Tell them!""
Daniel recoiled from her touch as if she were a venomous snake. ""I didn't authorize anything illegal,"" he stammered, pulling his arm away. ""I knew nothing about this!""

""You coward!"" she screamed as the handcuffs clicked sharply around her wrists, the sound ringing through the executive boardroom. ""You miserable coward! You used me just like you used her!""
As the officers escorted Vanessa out, her frantic cries echoing down the marble hallway, Daniel slumped into his chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. The entire room was silent except for the faint sound of papers shuffling as Claire’s attorneys prepared the termination paperwork.
