Chapter 6 - A Cold Reality

Twenty-four hours after the boardroom purge, Daniel Cole sat alone in his empty apartment. The Four Seasons penthouse had been booked through the company account; by noon on Monday, his keycard had been deactivated, and his personal luggage had been deposited onto the curb by hotel staff.
He was currently staying in a dingy, short-term corporate flat on the industrial edge of the city, surrounded by half-unpacked boxes and the stale smell of cheap takeout. His personal credit cards had been declined at the supermarket an hour ago. Because Daniel had used company credit lines to finance his extravagant personal lifestyle—from his sports cars to his private club memberships—Claire’s forensic accountants had frozen every account pending a comprehensive independent audit.
He sat on a folding chair, staring at the television. The local news anchor was delivering a devastating segment:
""In a stunning corporate shakeup, Cole Meridian Industries has ousted its long-time CEO, Daniel Cole, following allegations of financial mismanagement and executive misconduct. Interim leadership has been assumed by Claire Whitmore, heiress to the Whitmore shipping dynasty, whose decisive actions have sent Cole Meridian shares soaring by fourteen percent in early morning trading...""
Daniel switched off the TV with a trembling thumb. His phone rang. It was his mother, calling from Florida.
""Daniel, what have you done?"" his mother wept into the phone. ""The bank called about the mortgage on my condo! They said the corporate stipend account was cancelled! Is it true what they are saying about that communications woman?""
""Mom, please, calm down,"" Daniel pleaded, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. ""It’s a misunderstanding. Claire is just trying to punish me. I’m going to fix it. I’m going to meet with her and talk sense into her.""
""Fix it?"" his mother scoffed through her tears. ""Your father told you a hundred times, Daniel! He told you that Claire was the heart of everything we had! You thought you were a genius because you wore expensive suits and appeared on magazine covers, but you forgot who laid the foundation beneath your feet! Call her and beg, Daniel. Beg for your life.""
She slammed down the phone.

Daniel looked around the bare room. He remembered the empty apartment they had shared fourteen years ago. Back then, they had eaten cold noodles on the floor, laughing through the struggle, dreaming of the future. He had told Claire they would build an empire together. But as soon as the empire stood tall, he had convinced himself that he was a god who had built it single-handedly—and that Claire was merely a domestic accessory he had outgrown.
He grabbed his coat, desperate. He needed to see her.
