Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

By Monday morning at 7:45 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Cole Meridian Industries in downtown Philadelphia was surrounded by corporate reporters. Daniel pushed through the revolving doors with Vanessa walking half a step behind him, dressed in an immaculate charcoal power suit, carrying an alligator-skin briefcase.

""Stay confident, Daniel,"" Vanessa murmured, checking her lipstick in the elevator mirror. ""The board cares about numbers, not morality. You delivered twelve consecutive quarters of record logistics growth. They aren't going to oust the golden goose over a broken marriage.""

Daniel adjusted his tie, his pulse racing. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. The document from the Gladwyne dresser was burning a hole inside his breast pocket. He had sent a frantic snapshot to his personal attorney at midnight, but the attorney hadn't returned his calls.

When the elevator chimed on the 48th floor, Daniel stepped out into the executive suite. Usually, the receptionists greeted him with deferential nods. Today, they avoided his eyes, looking down at their monitors in stony silence.

He pushed open the heavy double oak doors to the boardroom. Every single member of the board was already seated around the forty-foot mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, the legendary corporate restructuring attorney who hadn't taken an active case in a decade.

""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Daniel said, putting on his practiced, commanding smile as he took his seat at the center. ""I understand that personal matters from Saturday evening have created unnecessary noise. Vanessa has prepared an aggressive PR strategy to reassure Wall Street that our leadership remains unshakeable—""

""Save your breath, Daniel,"" Arthur Pendelton said flatly, taking off his gold-rimmed reading glasses and resting them on a leather folder. ""This is not an emergency PR meeting. This is a special convening of the voting equity shareholders.""

Daniel frowned, leaning forward. ""Arthur, you represent the Whitmore estate, which holds a non-voting advisory stake. You don't have the legal authority to call a shareholder vote without my consent.""

""That was true under Article 4,"" Arthur replied calmly. ""Until yesterday at midnight, when your wife invoked the breach of fiduciary character and ownership transfer clauses outlined in the foundation charter of 2006.""

The side door to the boardroom swung open.

Claire walked into the room. She was wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, her hair gathered in an elegant chignon, her face radiant, completely stripped of the exhaustion she had worn for years. Following her was an entire legal team carrying four rolling carts of archived files.

Vanessa stood up, sneering. ""Claire, you can't just wander in here because you're angry about Daniel’s personal life. This is a Fortune 500 company, not your family living room.""

Claire didn't even glance at Vanessa. She pulled out a leather chair directly opposite Daniel and sat down, folding her hands neatly on the table.

""Vanessa,"" Claire said with chilling composure, ""you’re dismissed. Security is already clearing out your office on the 42nd floor.""
