Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Throne

The press conference was a masterclass in corporate survival. While the mainstream media ran sensational headlines about Daniel's arrest and the shocking betrayal uncovered inside the boardroom, I took the stage in the executive auditorium without a wheelchair. I stood behind the podium, using a simple wooden cane to support my weight, looking straight into the battery of flashing cameras.

I didn't hide my scars. I didn't hide the bruising along my neck or the strain in my voice.

""Blackwood Technologies was founded on a lie,"" I announced to the room of eighty international journalists. ""The lie that a company is defined by its loudest voice. Today, that era ends. As the original creator and proprietary holder of the AURORA operating engine, I am restructuring this organization from the bedrock up. We are rebranding as Carter Dynamics. We are opening our core architecture to independent third-party audit, and every dime of the thirty-six million dollars misappropriated by former management will be reimbursed directly from the forfeited executive compensation pool.""

The market reacted with astonishing speed. The trading halt was lifted twenty minutes after my speech. Instead of the predicted collapse, institutional investors flooded back into the stock, recognizing that the actual intellectual asset was now under the direct command of its original architect. By market close that evening, Carter Dynamics was trading six percent higher than Blackwood Tech had opened that morning.

Over the next three weeks, my physical recovery progressed alongside the purge of the executive suite.

I set up my office on the sixty-fifth floor, ordering Daniel's gaudy gold-leaf furniture, his humidor, and his imported leather sofas to be thrown into a dumpster on the street below. In their place, I brought in functional ergonomic workstations, collaborative standing desks, and walls covered in floor-to-ceiling whiteboards.

Marcus Vance was the first to face my review. He stood in front of my desk with his hands behind his back, looking like a man awaiting the guillotine.

""I know I failed you, Evelyn,"" Marcus said, his voice thick with shame. ""When Daniel took over the operations and told me you were never going to wake up... I panicked. I had a mortgage, two kids in private school. I looked the other way when he started messing with the system routing. I deserve to be fired.""

I looked at him across my desk. Marcus had flaws—he lacked courage under political pressure—but he was an exceptional deployment engineer who knew the distributed network better than anyone else alive.

""You're not fired, Marcus,"" I said calmly.

He blinked, stunned. ""I'm not?""

""You're demoted,"" I clarified. ""Your executive bonus for the next two years is eliminated, and your salary is reduced to standard senior engineer scale. Furthermore, you will spend the next six months personally mentoring fifty junior software engineers recruited from public universities. If you ever conceal a compliance anomaly from me again, you won't just be fired; you'll join Daniel in federal custody. Do you accept?""

Tears welled up in Marcus's eyes. He bowed his head so low his chin touched his collarbone. ""Thank you, Evelyn. Thank you. I won't let you down.""

""Get back to work,"" I said.

As he walked out, Margaret Ellis walked in, carrying a fresh stack of legal binders.

""Vanessa Cole took a plea bargain twenty minutes ago,"" Margaret said, sitting across from me and crossing her legs. ""She’s singing like a canary. She surrendered every asset Daniel bought for her, including three penthouses in South Beach and that ridiculous Birkin bag. In exchange for a lighter sentence, she handed over Daniel's personal encrypted hard drive from their private safe.""

I raised an eyebrow. ""What's on it?""

""Everything,"" Margaret smiled coldly. ""Tax evasion, industrial espionage, and the explicit text messages he exchanged with the mechanic who cut your brake lines.""
