Chapter 4 - The Terms of Surrender

The silence that gripped the boardroom was absolute. Daniel looked at me as if an apparition had walked through the wall. His mouth opened and closed twice without producing a sound.

""Evelyn,"" Arthur Pendelton said, his voice dropping into a tone of profound, desperate deference. ""You... you shouldn't be out of bed. Your health—""

""My health is improving rapidly, Arthur,"" I said, gesturing for Margaret to wheel me toward the vacant foot of the conference table. ""Especially now that I am no longer breathing the recycled air of a marriage built on embezzlement, corporate sabotage, and attempted murder.""

""Watch your tongue, Evelyn!"" Daniel spat, finally finding his voice, though it lacked any trace of its former confidence. ""You're delusional. You suffered a severe head trauma in that car crash! You are having paranoid hallucinations, and I will have you remanded to psychiatric evaluation before I let you destroy this company!""

Margaret Ellis unzipped a thick leather folder and laid three heavy stacks of documents onto the table. The sharp slap of paper against wood sounded like a gunshot.

""These are certified bank statements from an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under the name of 'V-Cole Logistics LLC,'"" Margaret announced, looking directly at Vanessa, who shrank back into the corner of the room. ""Between March and October of this year, Daniel Blackwood systematically diverted thirty-six million dollars from Blackwood Tech's operational research reserves into this entity. These funds were used to purchase real estate in Miami, luxury vehicles, high-end jewelry, and—most recently—a wire transfer to an auto-repair enterprise located three miles from Evelyn’s highway crash site.""

Arthur Pendelton picked up the top document, his eyes scanning the numbers. His jaw tightened until the muscles in his neck stood out like cords. He turned his gaze slowly toward Daniel.

""You stole thirty-six million dollars from shareholder reserves?"" Arthur whispered. ""To buy condos for your assistant?""

""It was an investment vehicle!"" Daniel shouted, his face turning an ugly shade of blotchy purple. ""It was part of a confidential expansion plan! Evelyn is manipulating the records! She has root access, she could have fabricated those logs!""

""I didn't fabricate the paper trail at the Cayman National Bank, Daniel,"" I said calmly. ""And I certainly didn't fabricate the dashcam audio from your private company towncar, which backed up to my personal cloud server thirty minutes before you visited my hospital room.""

I tapped a command on the tablet resting in my lap.

The overhead speakers in the ceiling crackled to life. Daniel's distinct, arrogant voice filled the room with crystalline clarity:

'Once she signs the incapacity waiver, we trigger the restructuring. The doctor says she probably won't wake up anyway, but if she does, she'll have nothing left. We take the IP public under the new shell company, cash out eighty million in stock options, and leave the old company with the liabilities. By the time her family lawyers figure out the shell transfer, we'll be in Dubai.'

Then came Vanessa's giggling voice: 'And the Birkin? Did you pick up the crocodile one?'

'Already in the trunk, baby. Twenty grand. Pocket change compared to what we're stripping out today.'

The recording clicked off.

The silence that followed was terrifying. Two board members buried their faces in their hands. Arthur Pendelton looked down at his desk, shaking his head with disgust.

""So,"" I said, leaning forward, resting my forearms on the table. ""Here are the terms of Blackwood Technologies' survival. Condition one: Daniel Blackwood will tender his immediate, unconditional resignation as Chief Executive Officer and forfeit all equity, voting stock, and severance entitlements for gross breach of fiduciary duty and criminal conduct. Condition two: Vanessa Cole will be escorted from the premises by building security within ninety seconds, leaving behind every company-funded asset, including that handbag. Condition three: The board of directors will unanimously appoint me as Executive Chairman and interim Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.""

Daniel stared at me, his fists clenched, his chest heaving. ""And if we refuse? If the board votes against you?""

May you like

I smiled. It was the coldest expression I had ever worn in my life.

""Then at exactly four o'clock today, the AURORA operational system will initiate its mandatory cryptographic sunset sequence. Every database Blackwood manages will be wiped to unrecoverable blank sectors. By sunrise tomorrow, Blackwood Tech will not be a billion-dollar enterprise. It will be an empty shell with four hundred lawsuits and zero dollars in market value. The choice is yours, gentlemen.""
