Chapter 2 - The Ambush at Bedside

Standing in the doorway was Margaret Ellis, wearing an immaculate charcoal pinstripe suit, carrying a battered leather briefcase that had dismantled three hostile takeovers in the last decade alone. Behind her stood two uniformed sheriff’s deputies and an armed private security team carrying secure corporate couriers.

Margaret didn't look at Daniel. She didn't look at Vanessa, who was cowering behind an IV stand, clutching her crocodile bag against her chest like a riot shield. Margaret walked straight to my bedside, leaned down, and kissed my forehead.

""You're awake, Evelyn,"" Margaret said softly. ""The medical alert reached my private phone twenty minutes ago. I brought the injunctions.""

""Injunctions?"" Daniel stammered, stepping between Margaret and the bed. ""Wait a damn minute. Margaret, you were fired! The board of directors voted unanimously to terminate your firm's retainer with Blackwood Technologies yesterday morning!""

Margaret opened her briefcase on the rolling meal tray with deliberate, terrifying calm. She pulled out a stamped document bearing the embossed seal of the Delaware Chancery Court and slapped it squarely against Daniel’s custom-tailored chest.

""I was never retained by Blackwood Technologies, Daniel,"" Margaret replied, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. ""My retainer has always been held exclusively by Evelyn Carter, under a trust established prior to your marriage. And this document is an emergency restraining order signed by Judge Sterling forty minutes ago, invalidating your sham board meeting on grounds of fraudulent misrepresentation and breach of fiduciary trust.""

Daniel looked at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. ""She was legally incapacitated! The company bylaws clearly state that if an executive officer is comatose or unable to discharge duties for more than fourteen consecutive business days, the board has the statutory right to appoint an interim proxy and reallocate administrative authority!""

""Except Evelyn didn't suffer a natural medical emergency, did she, Daniel?"" Margaret asked quietly.

The room went dead silent. The only sound was the rhythmic, hollow hum of the oxygen concentrator beside my bed.

Daniel took half a step backward. ""What are you implying? It was an accident. Her brakes failed on the highway. It was raining. It was a tragic mechanical malfunction!""

""A mechanical malfunction on a three-month-old custom SUV that had its primary brake fluid lines inspected forty-eight hours prior at an independent garage,"" Margaret said, her tone icy and merciless. ""A garage owned by Vanessa Cole’s first cousin. A garage that received a fifty-thousand-dollar cash transfer from one of your personal offshore slush funds the day before Evelyn's steering locked up on Route Nine.""

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp. The expensive Birkin bag slipped out of her fingers and slammed onto the linoleum floor with a heavy, dead thud. She looked at Daniel, her eyes wide with terror. ""Daniel... you said the payment trail was untraceable. You said you used a non-custodial crypto wallet!""

""Shut your mouth!"" Daniel screamed, lunging toward her with his hand raised.

Before his arm could drop, one of the sheriff's deputies stepped forward, his hand resting firmly on the grip of his taser. ""Step back, sir. Keep your hands where everyone can see them.""

I pushed myself up against the adjustable mattress, ignoring the blinding spike of pain that shot through my fractured ribs. I looked at Daniel, the man who had whispered vows of eternal loyalty into my ear twelve years ago when we were eating ninety-nine-cent ramen in a damp garage apartment.

""You really thought I was helpless, didn't you?"" I said, my voice hoarse but completely steady. ""You thought if you broke my body, the software would just sit there waiting for your commands. You forgot that I built AURORA from raw mathematical logic. Every line of code knows who wrote it. And right now, Blackwood Technologies doesn't have an operating system. It has an eviction notice.""
