Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

Two weeks passed, each day a high-stakes chess match played out in glass boardrooms and sealed judicial chambers. Alexander’s desperate smear campaign began to buckle under the weight of Kane’s counter-offensive. Marcus’s investigators worked around the clock, peeling back the layers of Moretti Enterprises’ shell corporations like cheap wallpaper.
What they uncovered was far dirtier than mere executive infidelity.
It turned out that Olivia Hayes was not just an ambitious secretary; she was the niece of Julian Vance—Daniel Vance’s estranged, disgraced cousin who ran an unlicensed hedge fund in the Cayman Islands. Alexander had been funneling millions in offshore company funds into Julian’s accounts, using Olivia as the registered corporate officer to evade federal tax scrutiny. The $300,000 diamond necklace, the luxury penthouse, and the multi-million-dollar wire transfers weren't just gifts of infatuation—they were disguised kickbacks and money-laundering conduits.
""He didn't just betray you, Claire,"" Daniel explained as we reviewed the financial flowcharts in Marcus's private conference room. ""He used your family’s pristine name to launder dirty capital to keep his failing logistics division afloat. When you walked away with the Bennett shipping fleet, you severed his only legitimate revenue stream. His entire house of cards is on the verge of imploding.""
""And Olivia?"" I asked, looking at the photographs of the young woman living lavishly in the Gold Coast high-rise.
""Olivia is terrified,"" Daniel smiled coldly. ""She thought she was going to be the next Mrs. Moretti. She didn't realize Alexander structured the offshore entities so that all criminal liability falls entirely on her shoulders if the Department of Justice opens an investigation. Alexander used her as his human shield.""
I leaned back in my leather chair, a sudden sharp pain shooting through my abdomen. I gasped, pressing both hands against my belly.
In an instant, Marcus was at my side, kneeling beside my chair, his hand hovering supportively near my shoulder. ""Claire? What is it? Is it the baby?""
""Just... just a Braxton Hicks contraction, I think,"" I breathed, trying to regulate my inhale. The stress of the last month had taken an undeniable toll on my physical health. At seven months pregnant, my body was demanding rest, but the storm around me showed no signs of abating.
Marcus’s jaw clenched with tight, protective fury. ""That's it. No more meetings. No more strategy sessions. Daniel, handle the federal filings. Claire is going to my private estate in Lake Forest. She needs twenty-four-hour rest, world-class medical supervision, and absolute silence.""
""Marcus, I can't hide away,"" I insisted, though my body begged for the exact sanctuary he was offering.
""You aren't hiding, my darling,"" Marcus said softly, his voice dropping into an intimate register that sent a shiver down my spine. It was the first time he had ever used an endearment, and neither of us moved to correct it. ""You are preparing to bring a life into this world. Let me fight the monsters at the gate. Trust me.""
Looking into his unwavering amber eyes, I realized that I did trust him. Far more than I had ever trusted Alexander, even on our wedding day.
That evening, I was settled into the luxurious, sun-drenched master suite of Marcus's private Lake Forest manor, surrounded by lush manicured gardens and high-security iron gates. For the first time in months, I could hear the wind rustling through the oak trees instead of the roar of city traffic and paparazzi camera shutters.
At nine o'clock, my phone rang. It was an unlisted landline number. Assuming it was Daniel with an update on the judicial review, I answered.
""Claire?""
The voice was ragged, slurred, and laced with venomous despair. Alexander.
""How did you get this number?"" I demanded, sitting up in bed, my heart rate instantly spiking.
""Olivia is gone,"" Alexander laughed, a hollow, manic sound echoing through the receiver. ""The feds raided her apartment three hours ago, Claire. She turned state’s evidence within twenty minutes. She handed over every email, every ledger, every transaction. Do you hear me? Everything!""
""You did this to yourself, Alexander,"" I said coldly. ""You committed federal crimes to cover your own corporate incompetence.""
""No! Kane did this!"" Alexander roared, his voice cracking with hysteria. ""He manipulated you! He’s using you to steal my company, my legacy, and my child! But I’m not letting him have you, Claire. I know where you are. Kane’s little fortress in Lake Forest isn't as impenetrable as he thinks. I’m coming to take my wife and my baby back.""

The line went dead.
A sudden rumble of thunder shook the heavy glass windows of the estate, followed by the distant screech of tires violently breaching the estate’s outer perimeter gates.
