Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

""What the hell is this?"" Alexander’s voice dropped an octave, vibrating with raw, territorial venom. He ignored the security guards lingering out in the hall and stepped fully into the room, his eyes boring into Marcus Kane with undisguised hatred. ""Kane? What are you doing in my wife’s hotel room?""

Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't even bother to stand up. He merely crossed his long legs, rested an elbow on the arm of the chair, and took a measured sip of black coffee. ""I’m conducting business with the majority shareholder of Bennett Maritime, Alexander. Something you should have prioritized over jewelry auctions.""

""Shut your mouth,"" Alexander snapped, turning his burning fury onto me. He closed the distance between us until he stood just inches away. I could smell the faint scent of expensive bourbon and burnt coffee on his breath—the scent of a man who had stayed up all night watching his empire unravel. ""Claire, this ends right now. Do you have any idea what you did last night? The board has been convening emergency sessions since five this morning. The press is camped outside our home. Olivia is in tears at a private medical facility because she’s receiving death threats online!""

""Olivia?"" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of the tears he was likely expecting. ""You burst into my room, past hotel security, six months into my pregnancy, and your first concern is your assistant’s hurt feelings?""

""She is an innocent employee caught in the crossfire of your absurd jealousy!"" Alexander bellowed, losing the last shred of his composure. ""The necklace was a bonus, Claire! A strategic gift to retain key talent during the merger! You made a grotesque spectacle of our private lives over a piece of carbon and gold!""

""And the watch?"" I asked, stepping closer, refusing to give an inch. ""Was my birthday watch an executive retention bonus too, Alexander? What about the three-million-dollar penthouse on Michigan Avenue leased under a Moretti shell corporation? Was that her holiday stipend?""

Alexander’s expression flickered. For a split second, genuine shock and panic pierced through his mask of anger. He had genuinely believed those transactions were hidden beneath layers of offshore holding companies. He hadn't realized that my father’s forensic accountants had been monitoring those exact accounts for months.

""You spied on me?"" he whispered, his voice trembling with indignation.

""I protected myself,"" I corrected coldly. ""Because while you were playing house with a twenty-four-year-old social climber, I was carrying your child and watching you systematically dismantle the respect my family spent fifty years earning.""

Daniel Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents from his briefcase and slapping them directly against Alexander’s chest. Alexander caught them instinctively.

""What is this garbage?"" Alexander growled.

""That,"" Daniel said smoothly, ""is a formal summons for divorce on the grounds of adultery, fraud, and mental cruelty. Along with an immediate restraining order preventing you from coming within five hundred feet of Claire or any Bennett estate property. Furthermore, included in that packet is the formal revocation of your proxy voting rights for Bennett Maritime.""

Alexander looked down at the papers, his hands trembling as he scanned the front page. The color drained completely from his face. ""No. No, you can't do this. Without Bennett Maritime, the merger with European Logistics collapses. We lose the Atlantic corridor.""

""Correction,"" Marcus chimed in, setting his porcelain cup down with a sharp clink against the saucer. ""You lose the corridor. Claire and I have just formalized a preliminary joint venture. Kane Logistics will be leasing the entire Bennett fleet starting next Monday. By noon, the board of Moretti Enterprises will receive formal notification that their largest operational partner has terminated all agreements for cause.""

Alexander stared at me, his chest heaving as if the air had been sucked out of the room. He reached out, his hand shaking, attempting to grasp my arm. ""Claire... please. Think about our baby. You can't destroy our family over a mistake. I will fire Olivia today. Right now. I’ll make her return the jewelry, the watch, everything. Just come home. We will get past this.""

I took two steps back, completely out of his reach, and rested both hands securely against my stomach.

""You didn't care about this baby when you humiliated its mother in front of three hundred people, Alexander,"" I said, looking him dead in the eyes with absolute finality. ""Get out of my room before I have the police arrest you for trespassing.""

Alexander stood frozen for five long seconds, his knuckles white around the legal documents. Finally, he looked at Marcus, then back at me, a dangerous, wounded snarl twisting his lips. ""You think you've won, Claire? You think this city will let a pregnant woman take down Moretti Enterprises? I made you. And I will take everything back.""

He spun on his heel and stormed out, slamming the heavy door behind him.
