Chapter 2 - The Lion at the Door

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in cold, jagged ribbons of gray and steel blue. I hadn't slept a wink. Instead, I had spent five hours pacing the expansive sitting room of the Drake suite, reviewing financial portfolios, personal trust documents, and offshore shipping manifests that my father had quietly entrusted to me before his passing. Alexander had always assumed I was oblivious to the intricacies of high finance, content to host charity galas and decorate nurseries. He had severely underestimated the daughter of Arthur Bennett.
At precisely seven in the morning, a firm, rhythmic knock echoed against the heavy mahogany suite door. Through the security peephole, I saw Marcus Kane. He stood tall, broad-shouldered, draped in a bespoke navy cashmere coat that screamed quiet dominance. Unlike Alexander’s sharp, predatory elegance, Marcus possessed an imposing, deliberate stillness. Behind him stood Daniel Vance, his leather briefcase bulging with legal filings.
I unlocked the door and stepped back. ""Gentlemen. You’re right on time.""
Marcus entered, his piercing amber eyes sweeping over the suite before settling on me with genuine concern. ""You look exhausted, Claire. But remarkably composed for a woman who just incinerated the Chicago high-society social registry.""
""I don't have the luxury of falling apart, Marcus,"" I replied, gesturing toward the armchairs surrounding the marble fireplace. ""Coffee is on the sideboard. We have exactly forty-five minutes before Alexander’s public relations department attempts to spin last night’s disaster into a misunderstanding.""
Daniel dropped his heavy briefcase onto the table with an authoritative thud. ""They’ve already started. Moretti Enterprises just issued an official press release claiming you suffered from 'hormone-induced emotional distress' related to high-risk pregnancy complications. They are claiming Alexander was merely presenting a corporate incentive reward to his chief of staff, and that you overreacted due to exhaustion.""
A bitter laugh escaped my throat. ""He is painting me as hysterical. Classic Alexander. He protects his stock valuation first and his family second.""
""That's where he made his fatal misstep,"" Marcus interjected, his deep voice carrying a lethal undercurrent of resolve. ""Alexander’s investors were already nervous about the supply chain bottlenecks in the East Coast terminals. If the board discovers that his personal liquidity is tied up in a contentious divorce that threatens his majority voting rights, the share price will plummet twenty percent by the opening bell on Monday.""
Marcus opened a thin leather folder and slid a single sheet of paper across the polished wood. ""Arthur left you forty percent of Bennett Maritime outright, Claire. When you married Alexander, you signed an agreement allowing Moretti Enterprises to manage those voting proxies. But section fourteen, paragraph C contains a standard morality and breach-of-trust clause. A public declaration of abandonment or infidelity immediately revokes that proxy and reverts absolute executive control back to you.""
My heart hammered against my ribs. For five years, Alexander had used my family’s maritime fleet to dominate the Great Lakes shipping corridors. Without those ships, Moretti Enterprises was an empty shell burdened by hundreds of millions in debt.
""Can he contest it?"" I asked, looking up at Daniel.
""He can try, but the video from last night has over fourteen million views across Instagram and TikTok,"" Daniel said, a grim smirk playing on his lips. ""Olivia Hayes was recorded telling a prominent patron that the diamond necklace was a private token of Alexander’s devotion. Every major tabloid has already matched the rose-gold watch she wore to the exclusive custom piece Alexander commissioned from Cartier under your family account last month. We have him dead to rights.""
Before I could reply, the suite’s intercom chimed shrilly. The front desk manager’s voice came through, strained and breathless. ""Mrs. Moretti? I am so sorry to disturb you, ma'am, but Mr. Alexander Moretti is downstairs in the lobby. He has four private security guards with him and is demanding immediate access to your floor. The Chicago Police Department has already been notified, but he is refusing to leave without seeing you.""
Marcus rose to his full height, buttoning his coat with slow, deliberate precision. ""Tell the desk to send him up,"" he said quietly.
""Marcus, no,"" I said, rising instinctively. ""This is between Alexander and me.""
""He believes you are alone, vulnerable, and frightened, Claire,"" Marcus countered, meeting my gaze with unflinching intensity. ""The moment he realizes you have the Kane Group and your father’s fleet behind you, the battlefield changes entirely. Let him see what his arrogance has cost him.""
Five minutes later, the corridor outside erupted with the heavy thud of hurried footsteps. The suite door didn't just open; it flew inward with violent force. Alexander stood in the doorway, his silk tie loosened, his collar unbuttoned, his dark hair disheveled. He looked nothing like the untouchable king of Chicago commerce. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble, and his gaze was wild as it locked onto me.

""Claire,"" he breathed out, taking a frantic step forward. ""Thank God. Pack your things right now. We are going home.""
Then, his gaze flickered to the side, and he froze. His eyes widened in disbelief as he registered Marcus Kane sitting comfortably across from his estranged wife. The air in the room instantly turned to sub-zero ice.
