Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

The legal battle didn't just heat up; it went thermonuclear within seventy-two hours. Alexander wasn't a man who accepted defeat gracefully. When his attempts to contact me directly were blocked by a wall of restraining orders and security teams, he launched an all-out public relations war.
By Wednesday morning, prominent gossip columns and online tabloids began publishing anonymous leaks designed to assassinate my character. Headlines splashed across social media feeds: Is the Moretti Heiress Unstable? Insiders Claim Postpartum Depression Before Birth Led to Wild Ballroom Tantrum. Other articles slyly hinted at an improper relationship between Marcus Kane and myself, suggesting that my sudden business partnership was proof of an ongoing affair that preceded the charity auction.
I sat in the penthouse office of Kane Tower, watching the cable news anchors debate my mental stability on a massive muted television screen. Marcus entered carrying a glass of fresh orange juice and a plate of sliced fruit, setting them down beside my laptop.
""Don't read that trash, Claire,"" Marcus said gently, his usual sharp demeanor softening whenever we were alone. ""Alexander is paying five different PR crisis firms six figures a week to flood the search algorithms. It’s the death rattle of a desperate man.""
""I don't care what they say about me, Marcus,"" I said, rubbing the small of my back as a wave of fatigue washed over me. ""I care about what happens when my daughter grows up and reads that her mother was smeared as unstable and unfaithful. Alexander is trying to lay the groundwork to challenge my fitness as a mother in custody court.""
Marcus leaned against the edge of the mahogany desk, his expression darkening into pure thunder. ""He will never get near that child. Not while I have breath in my body.""
The sheer conviction in his voice made me look up. For the past two weeks, Marcus had been an absolute rock. He hadn't just provided business leverage; he had arranged private obstetric appointments with the top fetal medicine specialists in the state, placed his personal security detail around my mother’s country estate, and ensured I never felt alone in this war. There was no pressure, no inappropriate advances—only an unwavering, steadfast protection that Alexander had long since abandoned.
""Why are you helping me like this, Marcus?"" I asked softly. ""I know this joint venture benefits your company, but this... protecting me like this... goes far beyond corporate strategy.""
Marcus held my gaze for a long moment, the intensity in his amber eyes making my heart skip an unfamiliar beat. ""Six years ago, before Alexander married you, I saw you at the Symphony Gala,"" he murmured, his voice low and rich. ""You were standing in the atrium, laughing with your father, completely radiant, completely genuine in a room full of manufactured smiles. I promised myself I would introduce myself that night. But Alexander stepped in first. He had the Bennett family backing, the charm, the pedigree. I stepped back because I thought he would make you happy.""
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead before pulling back respectfully. ""I watched him slowly dim your light for five years, Claire. I watched him treat the most remarkable woman in Chicago like a decorative accessory. When he put that necklace on that girl on that stage, I swore to God I would never let him hurt you again.""
Before I could process the gravity of his confession, Daniel Vance burst into the office without knocking. His face was pale, his tie askew.
""We have a massive problem,"" Daniel gasped, dropping a legal folder onto the desk. ""Alexander just filed an ex-parte emergency injunction with Judge Thornton. He is claiming that Bennett Maritime’s offshore accounts were used for illegal money laundering by your late father. He has frozen every single Bennett account, including your personal trust fund. You have zero liquidity until a forensic audit is completed, which could take up to six months.""
I felt the room spin. ""That's impossible. My father ran a pristine operation. Those accounts are clean!""
""It doesn't matter if they’re clean or not,"" Daniel replied grimly. ""Alexander had Olivia Hayes submit sworn affidavits claiming she found encrypted ledgers in the corporate archives. Judge Thornton is an old fraternity brother of Alexander’s father. He granted the temporary freeze without even holding a preliminary hearing. Claire, you can’t pay your legal fees, your private security, or your medical expenses from your own accounts right now.""
Alexander was trying to starve me out. He wanted me trapped, broke, and pregnant, forced to crawl back to his penthouse to beg for mercy.
""How much does she need?"" Marcus asked immediately, his voice cold, flat, and absolute.
""Marcus, no,"" I protested, panic rising in my throat. ""I cannot take your money. That will only fuel Alexander’s narrative that you are funding me in exchange for—""
May you like
""I don't give a damn about Alexander's narrative,"" Marcus cut in, stepping directly in front of me, his eyes blazing with an unshakeable resolve. ""Daniel, open a private escrow account through Kane International immediately. Deposit fifty million dollars under Claire’s exclusive signature. Buy out Judge Thornton’s campaign debts, file a complaint with the judicial review board for blatant conflict of interest, and dispatch our own forensic investigators to Moretti headquarters.""
Marcus looked down at me, taking both of my trembling hands into his own. ""He wanted a war of attrition, Claire. We are going to give him total annihilation.""
