Chapter 8 - The Kneeling Titan

The silence on the terrace was heavy, broken only by the distant roar of traffic on Lake Shore Drive below.

Damian turned toward me, his shoulders sagging with the crushing weight of seven years of foolish arrogance.

"The photograph," Damian choked out, tears suddenly welling in his dark eyes, glistening in the moonlight. "Three years ago... the photo of me kissing Vanessa on her office sofa."

I looked up at him, my expression tranquil and still.

"It was staged, wasn't it?" I asked quietly.

Damian fell to his knees on the freezing stone floor of the terrace, right before my worn department store flats.

The proud, untouchable chairman of Cross Industries wept openly, burying his face in his trembling hands, his forehead resting against the hem of my emerald dress.

"She spiked my bourbon at the victory dinner," Damian sobbed, his voice breaking into raw, agonized fragments. "I passed out on the sofa. She hired a photographer to shoot the angle through the glass. When you stormed in the next morning, I was so hungover, so defensive, so terrified of looking weak... I lashed out at you."

He lifted his head, his face streaked with tears of genuine, agonizing remorse.

"I told you that if you couldn't live with me, you should leave," he wept. "It was the biggest lie of my life. I wanted you to fight for me. I wanted you to tell me that nothing could tear us apart. And when you walked away, my entire soul went dark."

I looked down at the man who had ruled my youth, the man I had once loved enough to bleed for, the man who had let me walk into the rain with sixty-three dollars in my bank account.

"You let me leave, Damian," I said softly, a solitary tear sliding down my cheek. "You let me live in a drafty room above a convenience store. You let me carry food up four flights of stairs in the freezing rain to pay eighty dollars for electricity."

"I searched for you, Elena!" he cried out, grasping at the fabric of my coat with desperate fingers. "Every single day! My investigators couldn't find you because your uncle was using Aegis security protocols to mask your social security number! When I saw you outside that tower on Tuesday... I thought God had finally given me a second chance!"

"You didn't ask for a second chance, Damian," I replied, my voice steady and clear. "You offered me a transaction. You told me Ethan needed a mother, and you handed me a black credit card to buy my silence."

Damian bowed his head against my knees, his broad frame shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs.

"I have nothing left, Elena," he whispered into the cold night. "You own the company. You own my debt. You own my home. If you want to destroy me, just sign the liquidation order. I won't fight you."

May you like

I reached down, my fingers gently touching the side of his trembling face, tilting his chin up until his tear-filled eyes met mine.

"I didn't save your company to destroy you, Damian," I whispered softly. "I saved it because Ethan loves his big brother. And because beneath all that poison and arrogance, there was once a boy who promised to protect me from the world."
