Chapter 6 - The Shattered Boardroom

At ten-fifteen that night, the double doors of the hotel’s private presidential conference suite clicked shut.
Damian sat at the head of the long glass table, surrounded by his top legal counsel and Vanessa Reed, who was tapping furiously on her tablet with an air of smug superiority.
Across from them sat Arthur Vance and four senior directors of Apex Maritime.
"Gentlemen," Damian began, resting his forearms against the table with commanding authority. "Let's dispense with the pleasantries. Cross Industries holds seventy-four percent of Apex's floating bond debt. Under the default restructuring provisions, we are exercising our right to absorb your southern logistics terminal."
Vanessa slid a thick legal docket across the glass toward Arthur. "The documentation is certified. You have forty-eight hours to execute the asset transfer, Mr. Vance."
Arthur didn't even look at the papers. He picked up his crystal tumbler of scotch, took a slow, deliberate sip, and smiled like a crocodile basking in the sun.
"You're very confident, Damian," Arthur remarked calmly. "Just like your father used to be. But your father always remembered to check the primary creditor registry before he made a claim."
Damian frowned slightly, a faint flicker of unease darting through his eyes. "The debt was cleared through Zurich Credit. Our collateral was verified on Monday."
"Zurich Credit sold the debt notes at three o'clock today, Damian," Arthur announced, pulling a crisp, single-page document from his breast pocket and sliding it into the center of the table.
Damian picked up the paper, scanning the bold text.
His eyes widened in sudden, horrifying shock. The color drained from his face until his skin looked like chalk under the recessed ceiling lights.
"Aegis Strategic Capital?" Damian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "Who the hell is Aegis?!"
Vanessa leaned over his shoulder, her brow furrowing with nervous irritation. "That's impossible! Zurich promised us a thirty-day exclusivity window on those bonds! This has to be a clerical error!"
"There are no clerical errors at Aegis, Miss Reed," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Especially when the majority owner of Aegis happens to hold fifty-one percent of Cross Industries' primary voting stock."
Damian shot up from his chair, his hands slamming down onto the glass table with a deafening crack.
"Nobody owns fifty-one percent of my company!" Damian roared, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. "My father held forty-nine percent, and I inherited the rest!"
"Your father created an irrevocable matrimonial trust seven years ago, Damian," Arthur stated with brutal, absolute finality. "He transferred thirty percent of the operational voting equity to his daughter-in-law to ensure the company could never be stolen by reckless executives or greedy assistants."
The entire room went dead silent.
Vanessa’s tablet slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the carpet with a dull thud.
Damian stood frozen, staring at Arthur Vance as if a ghost had materialized in the center of the room.
May you like
"Elena...?" Damian choked out, his voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning. "Elena owns Aegis?"
"She has owned it for seven years, Damian," Arthur smiled coldly. "And she is currently waiting for you on the terrace."
