Chapter 7 - The Unmasking on the Balcony

Damian burst through the heavy French doors onto the freezing terrace, his tie loosened, his suit jacket flapping in the winter wind.
I was still sitting at the wrought-iron table, sipping a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea, wrapped in a black cashmere coat that fluttered in the lake breeze.
Damian stopped ten feet from me, his chest heaving under his white dress shirt as if he had sprinted five miles through a blizzard.
"You," he wheezed, his eyes wild, desperate, and completely undone. "All this time... you owned the company?"
"I didn't own the company to control you, Damian," I replied, setting my teacup down on the saucer with a quiet, delicate clink. "I owned it because your father knew you would eventually confuse your ego with your strength."
Vanessa rushed onto the terrace behind him, her face twisted in a mixture of panic, rage, and frantic calculation.
"Damian! Don't listen to her!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching his forearm. "This is an illegal hostile takeover! We can file an emergency injunction in chancery court! She hid assets during your divorce three years ago!"
I didn't even look at Vanessa. I reached into my evening clutch, pulled out a second manila envelope, and tossed it onto the table in front of Damian.
"What is this?" Damian asked, his trembling fingers reaching for the clasp.
"That is the forensic audit of Vanessa Reed's personal accounts in the Cayman Islands and Belize," I stated with chilling precision.
Damian opened the folder. Inside were certified wire receipts, encrypted emails, and transcripts of phone calls between Vanessa and an offshore short-selling syndicate.
"She didn't just sleep with your rivals, Damian," I said softly, the words cutting through the freezing air like a scalpel. "She shorted Cross Industries stock every time she gave you bad advice on logistics acquisitions. She has made fourteen million dollars betting on your failures over the last eighteen months."
Damian turned slowly, looking down at Vanessa.
The woman who had run his life for three years shrank back against the glass doors, her hands trembling violently, her mouth opening and closing without producing a single sound.
"Damian... please," Vanessa stammered, tears carving muddy tracks through her foundation. "I... I did it to build a fund for us! I wanted us to be free from your board!"
"Get away from me," Damian whispered, his voice vibrating with such lethal, terrifying disgust that Vanessa stumbled backward onto the marble.
"You're fired, Vanessa," Damian said, his voice cold as absolute zero. "Security will escort you to your office to collect your coat. If you ever come within five hundred yards of my company or my family again, I will personally hand this file to the United States Attorney."
Two private security guards materialized from the shadows, flanking Vanessa and marching her away through the French doors into the shadows of the hotel.

Damian stood alone on the terrace, staring at the empty lake, the cold wind whipping through his hair.
The empire he thought he ruled had crumbled in less than thirty minutes, leaving him naked, vulnerable, and completely alone before the woman he had discarded.
