Chapter 3 - The Forgotten Ledger

That afternoon, while Ethan was at his coding academy, I explored the quiet corners of the massive estate.

The third floor held Damian's private library—a vast, wood-paneled room smelling of leather, old books, and tobacco. In the far corner sat an antique walnut rolltop desk that had belonged to his late father.

I pulled open the middle drawer, checking behind the false wooden backing.

The small black leather notebook was still there.

Three years ago, on the night before I walked out, I had hidden my private financial tracking records inside this desk.

I opened the pages, running my thumb over the rows of encrypted numbers, offshore routing codes, and corporate registration IDs.

Beneath my maiden name, Elena Vance, sat an unlisted holding entity known in global markets as Aegis Strategic Capital.

When Damian’s father was dying seven years ago, he had known his son's arrogant ambition would eventually blind him to predators in the boardroom. The old man had secretly transferred thirty percent of Cross Industries' primary voting debt to me, under a strictly protected matrimonial covenant.

"Damian is brilliant, Elena," the old man had whispered from his hospital bed, clutching my hand. "But he thinks he can command the wind. When he flies too close to the sun, you will be the parachute that keeps this family from breaking its neck."

I had never used that power.

I had been too in love, too desperate to be adored as a woman rather than respected as a financial strategist. I had hidden the power away, hoping my devotion alone would be enough to earn Damian's heart.

The door to the library creaked open.

Vanessa Reed stood in the doorway, holding a sleek leather folder. She had taken off her blazer, her posture rigid as she took in my presence near Damian's personal desk.

"This room is private, Elena," Vanessa said coldly, dropping all pretense of her previous polite mask.

"I lived in this house for five years before you were hired, Vanessa," I replied evenly, closing the desk drawer with a soft, definitive click. "There is no room in this property that is private from me."

Vanessa walked toward the desk, setting the folder down on the dark wood with an aggressive tap of her manicured fingernails.

"You think you've won because he brought you back for the boy," Vanessa hissed, leaning down until her perfume filled the air between us. "Damian only married you again because Ethan was failing school and threatening to run away to boarding school in Switzerland. You're a glorified nanny with a legal ring."

I sat in the leather armchair, resting my chin on my palm, observing her with the cool detachment of a scientist watching a specimen under glass.

"And what does that make you, Vanessa?" I asked softly.

Vanessa's eyes flashed with venom. "I run his empire. I manage his calendar, his mergers, and his board alliances. He trusts my mind. What do you give him? Scrambled eggs and silence?"

"If your position was secure, Vanessa," I whispered, holding her furious gaze without a single blink, "you wouldn't be standing in a library at two in the afternoon trying to convince a 'nanny' that you matter."

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. She stepped back as if slapped, her face draining of color before she spun around and marched out of the room.
