Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The executive boardroom at Northline headquarters was usually silent on Sunday mornings. Today, however, the air was thick with the scent of high-stakes corporate warfare.

Nine board members sat around the massive glass table, their faces grim and anxious. Daniel Mercer sat at the far end, looking immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit, a smug, venomous smirk plastered across his face. Beside him, Mark Henderson sat with a sleek leather briefcase containing the blackmail photographs.

I stood beside the projector screen at the front of the room, wearing a dark navy suit, perfectly calm. Camila sat at the head of the table, commanding the room with imperial grace.

""Thank you all for arriving on such short notice,"" Daniel began, clearing his throat and adopting a sorrowful, dramatic tone. ""I called this emergency meeting because our beloved founder, Camila Rhodes, has compromised the ethical foundation of this firm. Last night at my foundation gala, indisputable evidence was obtained regarding an inappropriate, highly compromised relationship between Ms. Rhodes and her subordinate, Mr. Scott.""

Daniel nodded toward Henderson, who pulled out a glossy folder and slid copies of the terrace photographs toward each board member.

Whispers broke out around the table. Several older members frowned, looking toward Camila with disappointment.

""As an equity partner,"" Daniel continued smoothly, standing up to address the room, ""I cannot in good conscience allow our European expansion to proceed under leadership that abuses power and invites public scandal. Therefore, I move that Camila Rhodes be stripped of her CEO title immediately, pending an internal ethics review, and that voting control be temporarily transferred to Mercer Capital.""

""Are you finished, Daniel?"" Camila asked coolly, not flinching for a single second.

Daniel smiled condescendingly. ""The photos speak for themselves, Camila. You broke the corporate code of conduct. It's over.""

""Actually, Daniel,"" I spoke up, clicking the presentation remote in my hand, ""the only thing that's over is your career.""

The massive digital screen behind me flickered to life.

Instead of our campaign graphics, the screen displayed bank routing slips, server transfer logs, and encrypted emails bearing Daniel Mercer’s digital signature.

Daniel’s smug smile vanished instantly. His face went as white as chalk.

""What is this nonsense?"" Daniel stammered, gripping the edge of the mahogany table.

""These are the server logs from Friday afternoon,"" I announced, stepping forward so every board member could hear clearly. ""While Mr. Mercer was pretending to fly to London for personal business, his IP address was busy exfiltrating twenty-four proprietary client decks from our encrypted database directly to Apex Media Group—a competitor in which Mr. Mercer secretly holds a forty-percent equity stake.""

Gasps echoed around the table. Marcus from finance slammed his coffee cup down. ""What?! You leaked our European pitch to Apex?!""

""It's a lie! A fabricated smear campaign!"" Daniel shouted, panicking as the board members began grabbing the financial audit documents I had placed before them.

""The federal authorities don't think it's fabricated, Daniel,"" Camila said, her voice echoing with devastating authority. She picked up her phone and dialed a single number. ""Special Agent Miller? You can come in now.""

The boardroom doors opened. Two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by building security, stepped into the room.

""Daniel Mercer,"" Agent Miller stated, displaying his badge. ""You are under investigation for corporate espionage, insider trading, and wire fraud. Please step away from the table.""

Daniel looked around the room in utter terror, looking for an ally among the board members he thought he owned. Every single one of them turned away in disgust.

As the agents approached him, Daniel glared at me, his teeth bared in hatred. ""You ruined me, Scott. You're nothing! A low-level graphic designer!""

I walked over, leaned down until I was inches from his ear, and whispered, ""The difference between you and me, Mercer, is that you tried to buy something that was never for sale. Now get the hell out of our building.""

Daniel was escorted out of the boardroom in complete, humiliating silence.

When the doors shut, Camila looked at the remaining board members, her voice steady and clear. ""Now, gentlemen... shall we discuss our European expansion?""
