Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Balcony

The tension around the table shattered like thin glass. Daniel Mercer’s face drained of color before flushing an ugly, furious crimson.
""Excuse me?"" Daniel hissed, stepping into my face, his voice trembling with insulted pride. ""Do you have any idea who you're speaking to, Scott? I own ten percent of Northline Creative. I could have your desk cleared out and your credentials revoked by sunrise.""
""Try it,"" I replied, my voice dropping so low it was almost a growl. ""Call security right now. Call the board. Let's explain to everyone why an equity partner thinks he can harass our CEO and threaten employees in public. Let's see how your foundation's donors feel about that headline on Monday morning.""
Daniel sneered, turning toward Camila with an outstretched hand. ""Camila, control your subordinate. Fire him right now, or I swear to God I'll pull my capital from your European expansion tomorrow.""
The entire room seemed to freeze. All eyes turned to Camila Rhodes.
This was the moment of truth. An eight-figure investment hung in the balance. Three years of blood, sweat, and strategic maneuvering rested on keeping Daniel Mercer happy. Every logical business instinct dictated that she apologize, de-escalate, and reprimand me to save the capital.
Camila stood up slowly, her chin lifted high, her diamond choker catching the light. She didn't look at Daniel. She looked at me, her eyes burning with an intense, unreadable mixture of shock and fierce admiration.
Then she turned to Daniel, her voice slicing through the ballroom with absolute, freezing finality.
""You will never speak to my creative director like that again, Daniel.""
Daniel blinked, stunned. ""Camila, be reasonable—""
""Pull your funding,"" Camila stated calmly, loud enough for three nearby tables to hear. ""Cancel the contracts. Take your ten percent and choke on it. Northline doesn't need toxic money, and I certainly don't need a man who views my company—and me—as an asset he can bully. Goodnight, Daniel.""
Without waiting for his response, Camila grabbed my hand, laced her fingers tightly through mine, and pulled me toward the double glass doors leading out to the private stone terrace overlooking the cold, dark waters of Lake Michigan.
The autumn wind whipped around us as the balcony doors clicked shut, cutting off the noise and the stares of the ballroom. The cold air hit my flushed face, but the heat where Camila’s hand gripped mine was scorching.
She didn't let go. She dragged me toward the stone balustrade, her breathing ragged, her chest heaving against the midnight-blue velvet.
""Are you insane, Wesley?"" she breathed, spinning around to face me, though there was no real anger in her eyes—only a wild, terrifying storm of emotion. ""You threatened one of the wealthiest venture capitalists in the Midwest! In front of our biggest corporate clients!""
""He put his hands on you like he owned you,"" I snarled, stepping into her space, completely uncaring about boundaries or consequences anymore. ""I don't give a damn about his money, Camila. I don't give a damn about the European expansion. Nobody talks to you like that. Nobody touches you like that.""
""Why do you care so much?!"" she shouted into the wind, tears suddenly shimmering on her dark eyelashes. ""Why do you push every button I have, Wesley?! Why do you look at me like that every day in the office, and then act like it's just a damn game?!""
""Because I lost the bet, Camila!"" I yelled back, grabbing both of her bare shoulders and pulling her against me. ""I lost the damn bet the second you asked me to play it! I'm jealous! I'm insane with it! Every time Daniel looks at you, every time another man breathes your air, it tears me apart inside! I'm madly, completely in love with you, and I have been for three damn years!""
The terrace fell dead silent except for the howling wind and the distant crashing of waves against the lakefront shore.
Camila stared at me, her lips parted in disbelief, her eyes wide as a tear spilled over her lashes and traced a path down her cheek.

""Say something,"" I begged, my voice breaking under the weight of my raw confession. ""Fire me, yell at me, tell me I'm out of my mind... just don't look at me like that.""
Instead of answering, Camila reached up, tangled both hands in my hair, pulled my face down to hers, and crushed her lips against mine.
