Chapter 8 - The War Room

By 2:00 AM, the living room of Camila’s downtown high-rise apartment had transformed into a command bunker.

Documents, financial audits, and confidential shareholder rosters were spread across the wide marble coffee table. Camila had changed out of her velvet gown into an oversized gray cashmere sweater and leggings, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floors with her phone glued to her ear.

I sat at her dining table, my laptop glowing in the dim room, dissecting the corporate bylaws of Northline Creative.

""Jessa is on board,"" Camila said, ending a call and rubbing her tired temples. ""She’s calling our top three creative clients right now to secure written loyalty agreements. If Daniel tries to stage a board coup, we can threaten to walk with eighty percent of the agency's billing revenue.""

""That protects our revenue, but it doesn't protect the equity voting shares,"" I replied, typing rapidly into a legal database. ""Daniel holds ten percent, but he's aligned with two old-guard board members who control another twenty-five percent. If he frames this as a scandal—an improper executive relationship compromising company leadership—he can sway the neutral institutional investors.""

Camila stopped pacing and walked over to my chair, resting her hands on my shoulders. The gentle weight of her touch instantly grounded me. ""He's going to release those photos to the press at 8:00 AM on Monday, Wesley. The narrative will be that I compromised the agency's integrity by favoring you.""

""Then we change the narrative before he can write it,"" I said, turning to look up at her. ""Daniel Mercer is an arrogant bully, Camila, but arrogant bullies always leave dirty tracks when they move money. Why was he in London?""

Camila frowned. ""He told me he was finalizing a logistics merger.""

""Logistics? Mercer's fund specializes in tech and media. Why would he personally fly to London for forty-eight hours to handle a secondary logistics contract?""

I opened the public filings for Mercer Capital’s overseas shell subsidiaries, cross-referencing the registration numbers with our own vendor databases. For two hours, the only sound in the apartment was the clicking of my keyboard and Camila’s steady breathing beside me.

Suddenly, a pattern emerged on my screen.

""Look at this,"" I whispered, pointing at the glowing monitor.

Camila leaned down, her hair brushing against my cheek as she read the lines of financial transfers. ""What am I looking at?""

""Three weeks ago, Daniel's primary holding company in London purchased a controlling stake in Apex Media Group.""

Camila gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. ""Apex Media? They're our fiercest competitor in the Midwest. They pitched against us for the global beverage account last month!""

""It gets worse,"" I continued, feeling a surge of pure adrenaline. ""Daniel didn't just invest in Apex. He signed a non-disclosure agreement to facilitate a hostile acquisition of Northline Creative. He’s been funneling our proprietary campaign metrics, client retention data, and our European pitch deck directly to Apex's servers.""

""He was sabotaging us from the inside,"" Camila said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. ""He wanted to manufacture a scandal, force me out, depress Northline’s stock value, and then merge our agency into Apex at a fraction of our worth.""

""And that,"" I said, closing the laptop with a sharp snap and looking directly into Camila’s fierce, brilliant eyes, ""is corporate espionage, breach of fiduciary duty, and securities fraud. He didn't just break the rules, Camila. He committed multiple federal felonies.""

A slow, devastating smile spread across Camila’s lips. The fear was gone, replaced by the lethal, calculating brilliant founder I had fallen in love with.

""He thought he had me backed into a corner,"" Camila whispered, leaning down and pressing a tender, lingering kiss to my lips. ""Call Marcus. Call legal. We're calling an emergency shareholder summit for nine o'clock Sunday morning.""
