Chapter 7 - Shattered Boundaries

The kiss was electric, desperate, and starved.

All the pent-up tension of three years of professional restraint, late-night strategy sessions, stolen glances, and agonizing pride exploded between us on that freezing balcony. Her mouth was soft and burning hot against mine, tasting of vintage champagne and pure, unadulterated passion.

I groaned into her mouth, my arms wrapping tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet until she was pressed completely flush against me. Camila clung to me like a drowning woman finding shore, her fingers gripping the lapels of my tuxedo jacket, pulling me closer as if there still wasn't enough contact in the world to satisfy the hunger between us.

When we finally broke apart, gasping for air in the frosty Chicago night, our foreheads rested against each other. Her breath came in ragged, misty puffs against my lips.

""You idiot,"" she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of laughter and tears as she traced the line of my jaw with trembling fingers. ""You absolute, stubborn idiot.""

""Is that your professional assessment, Ms. Rhodes?"" I murmured, brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.

""I lost the bet five minutes after I made it,"" she confessed softly, looking straight into my soul with an honesty that took my breath away. ""When Elena Vance put her hands on your chest at the gala, I wanted to tear that room apart. I invented that ridiculous seven-day challenge because I was terrified that if I didn't test you, I'd end up dying without ever knowing if you felt the same way.""

A slow, incredulous smile spread across my face despite the freezing wind. ""You were jealous of Elena?""

""I was jealous of everyone, Wesley,"" she admitted, hiding her blushing face against my shoulder. ""Every woman who smiled at you in the lobby. Every client who praised your charm. I've spent two years watching you command every room you enter, wondering why the hell you never looked at me as anything more than your boss.""

""I spent two years convincing myself that looking at you would get me fired,"" I whispered into her hair, holding her tight against the cold. ""You were untouchable, Camila.""

""Never untouchable to you,"" she replied fiercely, lifting her head to meet my gaze. ""Never to you.""

The click of a camera shutter broke the stillness of the night.

We both froze.

At the far end of the terrace, partially hidden behind an ornamental evergreen hedge, a shadowy figure holding a telephoto camera lowered the lens. A cold grin spread across the man's face.

It wasn't a paparazzo. It was Mark Henderson, Daniel Mercer's private security chief and corporate fixer.

""Well, well,"" Henderson drawled, holding the digital camera up by its strap. ""The untouchable CEO of Northline Creative making out with her subordinate on a public terrace while an equity partner is humiliated inside. The board is going to find this fascinating.""

Camila stiffened in my arms, the color draining from her face. ""Henderson, delete that immediately.""

""Not my call, Ms. Rhodes. Mr. Mercer gave specific instructions. He wanted proof of gross misconduct. Unethical workplace behavior. Breach of fiduciary duty with senior staff."" Henderson sneered, tapping the memory card slot. ""By Monday morning, Daniel will have the leverage he needs to force your resignation. The board will remove you before the markets open.""

Before Camila could speak, Henderson turned and slipped back through the emergency stairwell door, vanishing into the hotel.

Camila stood frozen on the terrace, trembling from head to toe. The reality of what had just happened crashed over her like an avalanche. ""My company,"" she whispered, her voice hollow with terror. ""Wesley... he’s going to take my company.""

May you like

I cupped her cold face with both hands, forcing her to look into my eyes.

""Listen to me, Camila,"" I said, my voice rock-solid with absolute determination. ""He isn't taking a damn thing. You built Northline, and I'm not letting a bitter parasite steal it from you. We have thirty-six hours before the markets open. Let's go to war.""
