Chapter 9 - The Trial in the Rose Garden

Dawn broke over Chicago in a blaze of brilliant gold and crimson. The storm clouds had parted, leaving behind a crisp, clean autumn morning that smelled of fresh rain and wet pine.
In the private walled rose garden behind the Moretti manor, forty men stood in a silent semi-circle. Half of them were Moretti captains; the other half were Romano lieutenants. For the first time in thirty years, the two most powerful syndicates in the Midwest stood side by side, not in conflict, but in solemn judgment.
In the center of the flagstone patio knelt Marcus Valenti.
He was bruised, shivering in a plain grey jumpsuit, his wrists bound with heavy hemp rope. The arrogance was gone. The polished veneer was shattered. He looked up at Dante with the hollow, dead eyes of a condemned man.
Dante stood before him, wearing a fresh black suit, his left arm resting in a clean black sling. Beside Dante stood Dr. Sabini, his head wrapped in a white bandage, leaning on a polished walking stick.
""Marcus Valenti,"" Dante spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet garden. ""You were given trust. You were given honor. You were given a seat at my father's table. And in return, you brought poison into our home. You brought a death squad to butcher a mother and her child.""
""Dante... please,"" Marcus wept, bowing his head against the cold stone. ""Vance threatened my mother. He told me he would destroy my family if I didn't help him. I had no choice!""
""You always had a choice,"" Salvatore Romano said stepping forward, his voice cold as an executioner's blade. ""When someone threatens your blood, you come to your family. You don't sell out your brothers to a snake in a three-piece suit. You dishonored every man who ever broke bread with you.""
Enzo Bellini stepped forward, unrolling a formal legal document. ""By unanimous decree of the Commission, Marcus Valenti is stripped of all rank, all holdings, and all protection under family law. His assets in Illinois, New York, and Italy are confiscated to establish a permanent trust for the families of the men who fell defending this house last night.""
Marcus began to sob uncontrollably, realizing there was no reprieve, no clever argument, and no escape.
""I won't kill you here, Marcus,"" Dante said, looking down at the weeping traitor without an ounce of pity. ""Death in this garden is too clean for what you did. Nico has arranged for you to be delivered to a federal penitentiary in Colorado under an anonymous transfer. Every document proving your involvement in Vanguard's illegal weapons testing has been delivered to the United States Attorney's office. You will spend the rest of your natural life in an eight-by-ten concrete cell, forgotten by the world, knowing that a five-year-old child stripped you of everything you ever valued.""
Two armed Moretti guards hauled Marcus to his feet and dragged him away toward a waiting unmarked van. His desperate cries faded into the distance until only the chirping of morning sparrows remained in the rose bushes.
Salvatore Romano turned to Dante, extending his hand once more. ""My son's restaurant is hosting a banquet this Sunday, Dante. Taylor Street. I expect you to sit at the head of my table.""
May you like
""I will be honored, Salvatore,"" Dante replied, shaking the old man's hand firmly. ""The peace between our families will stand as long as I draw breath.""
Salvatore smiled, nodded to his lieutenants, and walked slowly toward the front gates, leaving behind an alliance forged not in ink, but in shared blood and mutual respect.
