Chapter 2 - Shadows in the East Gallery

Silence descended upon the room like a burial shroud. Enzo Bellini went as pale as the linen napkin in his lap, his trembling hand dropping his silver pen onto the floor with a sharp click. Nico drew his weapon smoothly, leveling the black barrel directly at Marcus’s temple.
Marcus did not lunge, nor did he panic. Instead, the polished veneer stripped away, revealing the cold, calculating serpent beneath. He let out a harsh, dry breath that twisted into a bitter sneer. ""A maid’s bastard,"" Marcus scoffed, his voice losing its deferential tone entirely. ""You are staking the empire your grandfather built on the rambling imagination of a five-year-old beggar girl?""
""She is the daughter of a United States sailor who gave his life for his country,"" Dante replied, his grip tightening until Marcus’s collarbones groaned beneath the tailored cloth. ""And she possesses more honor in her little finger than you have accumulated in forty years of breathing. Nico, take his phone. Take his keys. Strip his credentials.""
Nico stepped forward, pinning Marcus to the chair with one forearm while stripping him of his concealed weapon, his encrypted satellite phone, and his gold-plated signet ring. Marcus sat stiffly, his eyes darting toward the heavy mahogany door, calculating the distance to freedom. There were sixteen armed sentries posted along the perimeter, but none of them answered to Marcus anymore; the early morning shift had already been replaced by Nico’s personal kin.
""Who paid you, Marcus?"" Dante asked softly, walking back to the head of the table. ""The Romano family didn't do this. Salvatore is brutal, but he values family honor above all else. He would never target women and children at a public banquet. Who gave you the ceramic shell?""
Marcus laughed, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete. ""You think you're untouchable, Dante. You sit in this golden cage on the Gold Coast, pretending you're a benevolent king. But the world outside has changed. New syndicates have moved in from the East. Men who don't care about your ancient oaths, your handshakes, or your Catholic guilt. They offered me fifty million dollars and complete control of the Midwest shipping ports. All I had to do was wipe the slate clean.""
""And frame the Romanos so both families would butcher each other in the streets,"" Enzo whispered in horror. ""A gang war that would leave Chicago bleeding, defenseless, and ripe for a foreign takeover.""
""It was a brilliant plan,"" Marcus snarled, his gaze locking onto Dante with pure venom. ""And it would have worked. You would be lying in a refrigerated drawer at the Cook County morgue right now, alongside fifty of your captains. And in the chaos, I would have stepped up to restore 'order.' It was flawless. Until that little rat crawled behind the curtain.""
""She saved two hundred lives,"" Dante said, his voice dropping into a register of icy finality. ""Including yours, Marcus. Because if that poison had been released into the air system, you wouldn't have made it to the front door before your nervous system collapsed. They used you. You were the courier, and you were meant to die in the room with the rest of us.""
Marcus blinked, a sudden flicker of doubt passing behind his eyes. For the first time, fear showed through his arrogance. ""You're lying. The antidote—""
""There is no antidote for experimental aerosol agents, you fool,"" Dante said coldly. ""Sabini confirmed it. The ceramic shell was calibrated for instantaneous dispersion. Whoever gave you that package never intended to pay you fifty million dollars. They intended to bury you.""
Before Marcus could speak, Dante gave Nico a single nod. ""Take him to the sub-basement beneath the carriage house. Put him in chains. Strip him down to his skin and have Sabini test his clothes for chemical residue. No food. No water. He doesn't see the light of day until I give the order.""
""You can't hold me here forever, Dante!"" Marcus screamed as Nico hauled him to his feet, twisting his arms behind his back with bone-cracking efficiency. ""They know where I am! They know the timeline! If they don't hear from me by noon, they will burn this entire city to the ground!""
""Let them try,"" Dante murmured.
As Nico dragged the kicking, cursing traitor down the service corridor, the sound of Marcus's frantic shouts echoed off the marble walls before being cut off by the slamming of a heavy iron security door.
Dante turned to Enzo. ""Summon Salvatore Romano. Tell him I request an urgent sit-down at three o'clock at St. Jude’s Cathedral. No guards inside the sanctuary. Just him, his eldest son, and me.""

""And the girl, Boss?"" Enzo asked carefully. ""The staff knows she interrupted your party. If Marcus had contacts outside, her life could be in grave danger.""
Dante looked out the window toward the guest wing, where a little girl in an oversized yellow dress was currently eating warm strawberry pastries with her mother. ""Her life is now Moretti blood,"" Dante said firmly. ""Anyone who looks at her with malice will answer to my wrath.""
