Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Old Rail Yards

The Grand Avenue Rail Yards were a labyrinth of rusted boxcars, weed-choked tracks, and decaying brick warehouses stretching across sixty acres of desolate industrial wasteland. A torrential downpour turned the ground into a soup of black grease and mud as Dante’s strike team arrived.
Dante received the frantic radio message about the assault on his estate just as his tactical van cut its headlights three hundred yards from Warehouse Fourteen.
""Boss! The estate was hit! Clara and the girl made it out—they're secure at a secondary safehouse, but Dr. Sabini is wounded, and four of our men are down!""
Dante gripped his rifle until his knuckles cracked. He felt no panic, only a blinding, laser-focused coldness that had made him the most feared man in Illinois for twenty years. ""Keep them protected,"" Dante ordered through the comms. ""We finish this here. Now.""
Beside him, Salvatore Romano chambered a round into a heavy 12-gauge tactical shotgun. ""Vance made this personal, Dante. An attack on a man's home is an attack on all of us.""
Warehouse Fourteen loomed ahead like an iron fortress. Floodlights swept the perimeter, operated by twelve private contractors armed with advanced military hardware. They were professional soldiers, but they were fighting for an hourly wage; the men creeping through the mud behind Dante and Salvatore were fighting for their city, their families, and their honor.
""Nico, cut the power grid to the rail yard,"" Dante whispered.
Three seconds later, a dull boom echoed from the transformer station half a mile away. The blinding floodlights died instantly, plunging the entire sixty-acre yard into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by intermittent flashes of lightning.
""Move!"" Dante hissed.
The combined force of Moretti and Romano operators struck with ruthless coordination. Suppressed gunshots hissed through the drumming rain as sentries on the catwalks were eliminated before they could raise an alarm. Leo Romano, showing his father's blood for the first time, led three men around the eastern loading docks, neutralizing the perimeter guards with brutal efficiency.
Dante kicked open the reinforced side door of the warehouse, his weapon raised.
Inside, the vast space was filled with shipping crates bearing the logo of Vanguard Logistics. In the center of the concrete floor sat three steel pressure vessels, each five feet tall, surrounded by computerized mixing manifolds and digital timers glowing ominous neon green: 00:14:22... 00:14:21...
Fourteen minutes until automated release into the regional rail ventilation shafts.
""Drop your weapons!"" a voice boomed from the overhead crane platform.
Standing on the steel gantry fifty feet above was Gregory Vance himself, flanked by his chief of security and four elite bodyguards. Vance wore a tailored charcoal trench coat over a tactical vest, his silver hair slicked back, a cruel sneer twisting his thin lips.
""Dante Moretti,"" Vance shouted over the roar of the rain pounding against the corrugated tin roof. ""I have to applaud your persistence. You're like a cockroach that simply refuses to die under the heel of modern progress!""
""Vance!"" Dante’s voice echoed like a war horn through the cavernous structure. ""Step down from that gantry before I take your head off!""
Vance laughed hysterically. ""Look at the timers, you primitive thug! In thirteen minutes, those valves open automatically! The gas will travel through the subway ducts directly into the Loop! By morning, Chicago will be declared a federal disaster zone, and my security firm will receive an exclusive fifty-billion-dollar restoration charter! You and your little mobster friend cannot stop history!""
""We don't need to stop history,"" Salvatore Romano roared, stepping out from behind a stack of crates and leveling his shotgun directly at the gantry's support cables. ""We just need to kill you!""
A ferocious firefight erupted inside the warehouse.
Sparks rained from the ceiling as bullets chewed through steel beams and shipping containers. Vance’s bodyguards laid down heavy suppressing fire with light machine guns, pinning Dante’s men behind concrete barriers. Concrete dust and gunpowder smoke filled the air, burning their throats.
""Dante! The timers can't be stopped from down here!"" Nico yelled, firing a three-round burst from behind a forklift. ""The main console is on the gantry with Vance!""
""Cover me!"" Dante commanded.

Without waiting for an answer, Dante sprinted across an open stretch of concrete, sliding beneath a burst of automatic fire that sparked inches from his boots. Salvatore and his men opened up with everything they had, creating a wall of lead that forced Vance’s gunners to duck behind the gantry's armor plating.
Dante scrambled up the vertical maintenance ladder, his heart pounding with raw adrenaline. He was forty-five years old, but in that moment, he moved with the predatory speed of a panther hunting its prey.
