Chapter 4 - Whispers Beneath the City Streets

The subterranean depths beneath the Moretti carriage house had originally been built during Prohibition as a network of escape tunnels and hidden vaults. Thick limestone walls, sweating with condensation, kept the space freezing cold even in the heat of summer.
Marcus hung by his wrists from heavy iron chains bolted directly into the vaulted stone ceiling. His silk shirt was shredded, sweat and grime streaking his pale face. Despite his exhaustion, his eyes burned with feverish defiance when Dante entered the chamber, accompanied by Nico and Dr. Sabini.
""The clock is ticking, Dante,"" Marcus rasped, his voice raw from hours of silence. ""You think you're clever, but you're a dinosaur. You still fight with pistols and switchblades. The men I work for own satellites. They own senators. They own the chemical patents that can turn a city into a tomb without firing a single bullet.""
Dante pulled up a plain wooden stool and sat down directly across from the traitor. In his hand, he held a sleek black tablet showing a decrypted email intercepted from Vanguard Logistics.
""Gregory Vance,"" Dante said simply.
Marcus’s defiant smirk vanished instantly. His breath caught in his throat.
""Did you really believe Vance viewed you as an equal partner, Marcus?"" Dante asked, tapping the screen. ""We cracked the firmware on your satellite device. Vance had a GPS transponder linked to the package. The moment that ceramic cylinder opened, an automated signal was programmed to trigger an industrial fire in your luxury high-rise apartment on Michigan Avenue. Your bank accounts were set to be wiped simultaneously through an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands. You weren't his lieutenant, Marcus. You were his scapegoat. You were going to be found dead in a tragic 'mob hit,' leaving Vance’s front companies to sweep in and claim the waterfront under federal emergency protocols.""
Marcus stared at the tablet, his face draining of color. ""No... no, that's impossible. We had an agreement. He swore on his daughter's life—""
""A man who sells lethal nerve agents to wipe out two hundred civilians at a birthday party doesn't swear on anything, you idiot,"" Dante snapped, his eyes flashing with righteous fury. ""You sold out eleven years of brotherhood for a lie cooked up in a boardroom by an arms dealer.""
Tears of rage and humiliation began to roll down Marcus’s cheeks. The realization that he had been played like a cheap pawn broke through the last remnants of his arrogance. ""He... he has a private security force,"" Marcus stammered, his teeth chattering from the damp chill. ""Two dozen ex-special forces contractors stationed at the old Grand Avenue Rail Yards. They have three more dispersion canisters, Dante. If I don't confirm your death by four o'clock today, Vance ordered them to deploy the gas into the Chicago subway tunnels during evening rush hour. He wants to create an unprecedented terror incident so the governor declares martial law, freezing all municipal port authority contracts!""
Nico cursed violently, gripping the handle of his weapon. ""Mother of God. That's twenty thousand commuters.""
""Where in the rail yards?"" Dante demanded, rising to his feet and grabbing Marcus by the throat. ""Give me the exact warehouse and the access codes, or I will leave you down here to starve until your bones rot.""
""Warehouse Fourteen! By the loading docks near Track Nine!"" Marcus wheezed, gasping for breath. ""The security code for the inner vault is four-nine-two-zero! Please, Dante... Vance is insane. He doesn't care about human life! He treats the whole city like a battlefield simulation!""
Dante released him, letting the traitor swing helplessly in his iron bonds. He turned to Nico. ""Call Enzo. Cancel the meeting with Salvatore Romano at St. Jude's. Tell Salvatore to bring thirty of his best men and meet us at the West Side staging grounds in one hour. Tell him... his son's honor is at stake, and we have common prey to hunt.""

""You're partnering with Romano?"" Nico asked, his eyes wide. ""We haven't shared a tactical operation with that family since the territory wars of '03.""
""Salvatore hates corporate vultures even more than I do,"" Dante said grimly. ""And right now, Chicago belongs to the families who built it with their sweat and blood—not to an arms merchant trying to turn our home into a slaughterhouse.""
