Chapter 10 - The Girl in the Golden Dress

Three months later, on a crisp, snowy afternoon in late December, the great ballroom of the Moretti estate was once again ablaze with light.
Hundreds of white poinsettias lined the grand marble staircase, and the three massive crystal chandeliers threw rainbows across the polished floors. But there were no political maneuvers today. No tension, no hidden knives, and no dangerous packages.
Today was Sophie Alvarez's sixth birthday.
Over a hundred guests filled the room—not just underworld figures, but local community leaders, neighborhood families, and the proud surviving crewmates of Petty Officer Mateo Alvarez, who had flown in from Norfolk in their crisp navy dress uniforms.
At the front of the room stood Clara Alvarez, wearing a magnificent, elegant emerald-green evening gown. The shadows of grief and exhaustion had completely vanished from her face. With Dante’s backing, she had successfully won a historic civil judgment against the reorganized remnants of Vanguard Defense, securing a twenty-million-dollar endowment that she immediately converted into a foundation providing free legal and medical aid to military widows across the country.
Clara was now the director of the foundation, respected, independent, and radiant.
Dante Moretti stood beside the grand fireplace, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. In his hand, he held a crystal glass of sparkling cider.
A tiny hand tugged at his jacket.
Dante looked down and smiled. Sophie was wearing a brand-new, beautifully tailored dress made of shimmering golden silk, complete with a bright red ribbon tied perfectly into her braided hair.
""Uncle Dante!"" Sophie beamed, her eyes sparkling with pure, unadulterated joy. ""Look at my cake! It has six levels and a real chocolate carousel on top!""
""I see it, little princess,"" Dante laughed, kneeling down on one knee so they were eye to eye, just as he had done on his own fateful birthday three months earlier. ""The baker spent two whole days making sure the carousel actually spun.""
Sophie leaned in close, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck, whispering softly into his ear: ""I looked at all the presents this morning, Uncle Dante. Every single one.""
Dante raised an eyebrow, a warm smile touching his lips. ""And what did you find, detective?""
""Only teddy bears, books, and watercolor paints,"" Sophie whispered with absolute seriousness. ""No silver things. Everything is safe.""
Dante pulled her into a warm, protective embrace, resting his chin on her little shoulder. ""Everything is safe, sweetheart. Because as long as I am here, nobody in this world will ever frighten you or your mother again.""

From across the room, Clara met Dante’s gaze, raising her glass with a look of boundless gratitude and deep, unspoken affection. The string quartet began to play a joyful waltz, and the ballroom filled with laughter, music, and the warmth of a true family reborn from the ashes of betrayal.
Dante lifted Sophie up onto his shoulders, carrying the little girl who had saved an empire toward the glowing birthday candles, while the entire room erupted into applause for the youngest, bravest protector Chicago had ever known."
