Chapter 6 - Behind Locked Doors

The confined space of the elevator felt like a pressure cooker about to explode. The crimson emergency light bathed Ryan's face in stark shadows, turning his eyes into dark pools of raw, unmasked hunger. Lauren could feel the heat radiating off his chest, inches from her own.
""Ryan, don't,"" she breathed, though her voice lacked conviction. Every fiber of her body was screaming for the exact opposite.
""Tell me to stop, Lauren,"" he murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the sensitive curve of her throat, right over her racing pulse. ""Tell me you don't feel this. Tell me that when you stood outside my room that night, your heart wasn't beating as fast as mine was.""
""It's madness,"" she whispered, her eyes fluttering shut as a shiver ran down her spine. ""We'll destroy everything.""
""I don't care,"" he growled.
He closed the remaining distance. His mouth crashed down onto hers with an urgency that stole the breath straight from her lungs. It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss—it was desperate, hungry, fueled by months of stifled glances and unsaid words. Lauren gave in with a soft whimper, her hands tangling into the soft fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as she kissed him back with equal ferocity.
He backed her against the mirrored wall of the cab, his hands gripping her waist, lifting her slightly as their mouths moved together in a feverish rhythm. For those few suspended minutes, the company, the board, the rumors, and the entire city outside ceased to exist. There was only the taste of him, the intoxicating scent of sandalwood, and the heat of their bodies colliding.
Suddenly, a loud mechanical clunk echoed above them.
The primary generator roared to life. The harsh, blinding white overhead fluorescent lights flickered back on, and the elevator gave a soft chime as it resumed its downward descent toward the 20th floor.
They broke apart instantly, gasping for air.
Lauren scrambled to smooth down her suit jacket, her face burning, her lips swollen and tingling. Ryan stood tall, running a hand through his slightly disheveled hair, adjusting his silk tie with rapid, practiced movements, though his breathing remained ragged.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open onto the 20th-floor marketing department. Half a dozen employees were standing outside, waiting for the lift.
Ryan stepped out first, his face transformed back into the cold, impenetrable mask of the ruthless CEO. ""Mitchell, ensure those audit files are delivered to legal by two o'clock,"" he said in a flat, commanding tone, not sparing her a second glance as he strode down the hallway.

""Understood, Mr. Calloway,"" she replied, her voice trembling slightly.
She stood in the elevator as the doors closed again, staring at her reflection in the glass. Her hair was messy, her eyes were wide and dazed, and she knew with terrifying certainty that they had just crossed a line from which there was no return.
