Chapter 3 - The Black-Tie Trap

The formal victory gala was hosted on the terrace of the Lakeside Grand three nights later, celebrating the closed acquisition. Champagne flowed like water, jazz quartets played beneath string lights, and high society mingled in sequins and tuxedos. Lauren had spent half a paycheck on an emerald-green satin slip dress that cascaded to the floor, balancing understated elegance with a cut that made her feel undeniably powerful.

She stood near the perimeter railing, nursing a glass of dry white wine, listening to the lake water lap gently against the stone docks below. For the first time in weeks, she felt like she could finally breathe.

""You look breathtaking, Lauren.""

She turned to see Carter Hayes approaching. Carter was the senior managing director of acquisitions—handsome in a sharp, predatory way, hailing from old East Coast money, and a man whose advances Lauren had been politely deflecting for eighteen months.

""Thank you, Carter,"" she replied, keeping her tone cool. ""Great turnout tonight. The Vanguard team looks thrilled.""

""Who cares about Vanguard?"" Carter stepped closer, invading her personal space, smelling heavily of bourbon and expensive cologne. He placed a palm on the stone banister, effectively trapping her against the railing. ""I care about celebrating you. We make an incredible team, Mitchell. In the office... and maybe somewhere a little more private tonight?""

Lauren stiffened, setting her wine glass on the stone ledge. ""I'm here to celebrate the firm, Carter. Nothing else. Please take a step back.""

Carter’s smile turned thin and ugly. His hand reached out, catching her bare wrist, his grip uncomfortably tight. ""Don't play hard to get. We both know how the game works in this company. A little networking behind closed doors goes a long way toward that promotion you're chasing.""

""Let go of my wrist, Carter,"" she hissed, anger surging through her veins.

""Take your hand off her.""

The voice cut through the ambient noise like a guillotine.

Carter froze. Ryan appeared out of the shadows, towering over them, his black tuxedo tailoring making his broad frame look impossibly lethal. His hands were shoved casually in his pockets, but his eyes were pure, uncut obsidian.

""Ryan,"" Carter stammered, immediately dropping Lauren's arm as if he had touched live voltage. ""We were just... joking around. Celebrating the win.""

""You're not joking, Carter,"" Ryan said, stepping directly between them, his back partially shielding Lauren. His voice was terrifyingly calm, barely above a whisper, which made it ten times more menacing than a shout. ""You're embarrassing yourself. And more importantly, you're harassing my most valuable director. Walk away from this terrace right now, or your resignation will be on my desk before the market opens tomorrow morning.""

Carter swallowed hard, his face draining of color. Without another word, he spun on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.

Lauren rubbed her wrist where red marks were already forming, trying to hide the slight tremor in her fingers. ""I had it handled,"" she lied softly.

Ryan turned around to face her. His gaze dropped to her wrist, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. Gently, with surprising tenderness, he reached out and touched the tips of his fingers to her skin, just above the red mark. The contrast of his warm, calloused hand against her cool skin sent an electric shock straight up her arm.

""He won't touch you again,"" Ryan murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. ""I should have fired him six months ago.""

""Ryan... why do you care?"" Lauren whispered, looking up into his intense grey eyes. ""I'm just your analyst.""

Ryan took half a step closer, completely ignoring the crowd just fifty feet away. ""If you still think you're just an analyst to me, Lauren, then you're nowhere near as smart as your financial models.""
