Chapter 2 - The Boardroom Stare

The morning sunlight sliced mercilessly through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Lakeside Grand’s penthouse conference room, illuminating every dust mote and every bead of nervous sweat on the junior analysts' foreheads. Lauren sat at the long mahogany table, her spine rigid, her hair pulled into a severe, immaculate bun. She wore her sharpest navy power suit, buttoned high, desperate to encase herself in an impenetrable layer of fabric after the previous night’s humiliation.

Her hands were steady on her tablet, but her stomach churned like a stormy sea. Across from her sat the board of Vanguard Holdings, the target acquisition that could either elevate Calloway Capital into an international titan or trigger a brutal, highly publicized stock plunge.

The heavy double doors swung open, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Ryan strode inside. He was entirely back in his element: charcoal bespoke Brioni suit, silk tie knotted with razor precision, cufflinks glinting under the recessed chandeliers. His jaw was cleanly shaven, his eyes cold and assessing. The relaxed, barefoot man in grey sweatpants had evaporated like morning mist.

""Morning, gentlemen,"" Ryan said smoothly, pulling out the leather chair at the head of the table. ""Mitchell. Run through the revised valuation on the logistics arm. We don't have all day to coddle Vanguard’s egos.""

""Right away, Mr. Calloway,"" Lauren replied, her voice firm, completely void of emotion. She stood up, tapping the clicker to bring up the financial model she had spent seventy hours rebuilding. She laid out the numbers cleanly, her delivery flawless, her tone biting and precise. She broke down the hidden supply chain debts Vanguard was trying to mask, her slide transitions seamless.

For forty-five minutes, she dominated the room. Whenever the Vanguard executives tried to push back with vague corporate jargon, she crushed their arguments with verified cold-hard analytics. Ryan sat back, steepled his long fingers beneath his chin, and watched her.

He didn't interrupt her once. But every time their eyes met across the vast expanse of polished mahogany, his left eyebrow would tick upward by a millimeter. It was a micro-expression, totally invisible to anyone else, but to Lauren, it was a booming reminder: I know what you look like with wet hair and nothing on under a cotton robe.

""The math is undeniably sound,"" the chairman of Vanguard finally conceded, letting out an exhausted sigh as he leaned back. ""Your analyst is terrifyingly thorough, Calloway. We’ll sign the preliminary intent before noon.""

The room erupted into quiet shuffling, handshakes, and polite applause. Colleagues clapped Lauren on the back, whispering congratulations on a pitch that would easily earn her a vice-president nomination by year’s end. She breathed a sigh of relief, beginning to pack her papers and laptop into her leather satchel.

""Mitchell. Leave the quarterly breakdown. Take a seat,"" Ryan commanded quietly over the chatter of departing executives.

Her heart did that annoying, dangerous flutter again. She waited until the room emptied, leaving the two of them alone in the vast, echoing boardroom.

""You did exceptional work today,"" Ryan said, closing his leather portfolio. He walked down the length of the table, stopping just inches from her chair, leaning against the edge with arms crossed.

""Thank you, Mr. Calloway. I just did what was expected.""

""Did you?"" He tilted his head, studying her face with an intensity that made the oxygen flee the room. ""Because last night you looked like you were going to faint on my welcome mat. Today you took apart five multimillionaires without blinking. I find myself wondering which version of Lauren Mitchell is the real one.""

May you like

""The professional one is the only one you need to worry about,"" she fired back, meeting his stare evenly despite the pulse thrumming in her throat.

Ryan smirked, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. ""Pity. I found the midnight version much more intriguing.""
