Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Hallway

Monday morning brought the inevitable backlash. Corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan was a glass-and-steel snake pit, and rumors traveled faster than high-frequency trading algorithms.

By ten o'clock, Lauren couldn't walk past the water cooler without feeling eyes tracking her every move. The whispers were quiet, toxic, and deliberate.

Did you hear? Carter got demoted from the senior committee overnight.

Yeah, because Mitchell cried to the CEO at the gala.

I heard she was seen coming out of Calloway's penthouse suite last week during the Chicago retreat.

In a robe, apparently. Someone saw them in the hallway.

Lauren gripped her coffee mug until her knuckles ached, sitting at her desk in the open-plan bullpen. Her stomach was tied into sickening knots. Two years of eighty-hour workweeks, missed holidays, canceled dates, and flawless balance sheets were being shredded into office gossip in less than twelve hours. They weren't calling her brilliant. They weren't calling her a prodigy. They were calling her an opportunist who slept her way to the top.

Emma slipped into the glass-walled office, quietly pulling the door shut behind her. ""Have you seen the company Slack channels? People are being disgusting.""

""Carter's spreading it,"" Lauren said, her voice shaking with suppressed fury. ""He couldn't take the rejection, so he's trying to burn my reputation to the ground before the board announces the VP seat.""

""What are you going to do?""

""Nothing,"" Lauren said coldly, staring at her monitor. ""If I react, it looks like guilt. If I complain to HR, it looks like Ryan is protecting me. I'm going to put my head down, do my job, and let the audit committee see the results.""

The intercom on her desk chimed sharply. Her executive assistant's voice came through: ""Lauren, Mr. Calloway wants you in the 40th-floor corner office immediately.""

Emma gave her an apologetic look. ""Good luck.""

Lauren rode the private elevator up to the executive suite, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. When she entered Ryan's massive corner office, she found him standing by the glass window looking out over the Manhattan skyline.

""Shut the door, Lauren,"" he commanded without turning around.

She shut it, the heavy sound echoing with finality. ""If this is about the rumors, Ryan, I don't want special treatment. Don't fire Carter over me. It will only validate everything they're whispering.""

Ryan turned around slowly. His eyes were dark, shadowed with exhaustion and an anger so profound it seemed to fill the room. ""The board received an anonymous ethics complaint this morning. Claiming improper conduct, favoritism, and breach of executive protocol during the Lakeside trip.""

Lauren felt the blood drain completely from her face. ""An ethics investigation? Over a knocked-on door?""

""Carter submitted it,"" Ryan said, walking toward his desk and tossing a printed dossier onto the leather blotter. ""He claims you're using an inappropriate personal relationship with me to secure the Vice President position over him. And until the internal review is closed, the board has frozen all executive promotions.""

""This is insane!"" she cried out, her composure finally shattering. ""You know nothing happened! We haven't done anything!""

Ryan stopped right in front of her, closing the distance between them until she had to tilt her head back to look into his eyes. ""That's the problem, isn't it?"" he whispered, his voice dangerously low. ""Nothing happened. But every second of every day since you stood in front of me in that hallway, Lauren... I've wished something did.""
