Chapter 7 - A Boy's Broken Trust

When I returned to the hotel suite that afternoon, the battle against Stephanie had been won in the legal sphere, but the battle for my son’s soul was just beginning.
I found Mason sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed. He had his knees pulled up to his chest, staring blankly out the window toward the desert highway. The television was off. The room was deathly quiet.
I sat down on the edge of the mattress next to him, leaving enough space so he wouldn't feel crowded.
""Hey, buddy,"" I said softly.
He didn't move. He kept his eyes glued to the distant mountains.
""Mom?"" he whispered, his voice trembling. ""Am I going to jail?""
The question struck me like a physical blow. I shifted closer, reaching out to place a gentle hand on his knee. ""What? Mason, why on earth would you think you're going to jail?""
A fat tear rolled down his cheek, followed by another. ""Because I gave them the medicine. Aunt Steph told me that the police arrest people who give poison to babies. She told me that if I ever told anyone, the police would come and put handcuffs on me and lock me in a cell where you could never find me.""
He buried his face in his hands, his whole body shaking with violent, racking sobs that had been trapped inside his little chest for nearly a year.
""I was so scared, Mom! I didn't want to do it! But if I said no, she locked me in the pantry and didn't give me dinner! She said you didn't want me anymore! She said you were staying in the Army because I was too much trouble and that she was the only person who cared about me! I wanted to call you, but she took my phone and changed the password!""
I couldn't hold back my own tears any longer. I gathered my boy into my arms, pulling his head against my chest, wrapping him in the fiercest, most protective embrace I had ever given him.
""Listen to me, Mason Ruiz,"" I whispered fiercely into his hair, kissing the top of his head over and over. ""You are completely innocent. Do you hear me? You were a victim of a cruel, sick woman who abused you and threatened you. The police know that. The judge knows that. The doctors know that. Nobody is taking you away. Nobody is putting you in handcuffs.""
""I... I thought you forgot about me,"" he sobbed, clutching the fabric of my uniform shirt until his fingers hurt.
May you like
""Never. Not for a single second of a single day,"" I swore to him, my voice breaking with raw, maternal love. ""Every night in Kuwait, I looked at your picture before I closed my eyes. Every morning, I woke up fighting to get back home to you. I took an early rotation just to surprise you. You are my son, my hero, and my whole life. We are never, ever going to be separated again.""
We stayed like that on the edge of the bed for a long time, rocking together as the afternoon desert sun painted the room in shades of amber and gold, washing away the shadows of the garage that had haunted him for so long.
