Chapter 2 - Code Red In Las Cruces

The sirens grew deafening within four minutes. I stayed on the floor, alternating between chest compressions and rescue breaths, counting every second under my breath. Mason had backed himself against the wall, clutching the purple bottle against his chest like a shield, tears silently streaming down his pale, hollow cheeks. He looked so small, his military-brat resilience completely broken down by weeks of isolation, terror, and forced servitude.

Tires screeched on the gravel outside. Two Las Cruces police cruisers and a county ambulance tore into the driveway, blocking the six parked cars belonging to the unsuspecting parents who thought their children were being cared for by a licensed adult.

Paramedics burst through the garage door, medical jump bags in hand.

""Where is he?"" the lead paramedic shouted.

""Here! Eight-month-old, lethargic, unreactive pupils, faint bradycardia,"" I reported smoothly, clearing the space so they could work. ""Administered an unknown quantity of pediatric antihistamine within the last two hours. Suspected intentional chemical sedation.""

The paramedic grabbed the small vial of pediatric Narcan and oxygen mask from his kit. ""We need to bag him and transport immediately to Memorial Medical Center. Let's move!""

As the EMTs scooped the infant up and rushed him toward the gurney, two Las Cruces police officers stepped into the room, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts. Stephanie was already on her feet, adjusting her designer cardigan and smearing mascara across her cheeks to fake an emotional breakdown.

""Officers! Thank God you're here!"" Stephanie cried out, pointing an accusing finger directly at me. ""She broke into my home! She abandoned her child with me for a year, snuck back into town without notice, and assaulted me! She’s threatening me and traumatizing my daycare children!""

Officer Martinez, a seasoned local patrolman, looked at me, then at my Army service uniform, my ribbons, and the distinct black-and-gold CID crest pinned firmly to my breast pocket. His posture straightened immediately.

""Ma'am, what's going on here?"" Martinez asked me, keeping his voice even.

""Officer, my name is Staff Sergeant Toni Ruiz. I just returned from a rotation overseas to find my eleven-year-old son, who was supposed to be enrolled in middle school, running an illegal, unlicensed daycare facility out of an unheated garage,"" I said, my voice steady, cold, and factual. ""He was pulled from school twenty-two days ago under a forged withdrawal form. Furthermore, my sister has been systematically administering over-the-counter sedatives to these infants to keep them quiet while she sits inside the house.""

""That is a lie! He's lying! Mason did that on his own!"" Stephanie shrieked, her voice cracking as she threw her own nephew straight under the bus. ""He found the medicine in the bathroom! I never told him to touch it! If that baby is hurt, it was Mason's fault!""

Mason dropped his head, letting out a stifled, heartbreaking sob that shattered whatever remaining thread of familial loyalty I had left.

""He didn't touch anything on his own, and we both know it,"" I said, stepping forward. I held out my phone, opening the photo gallery. ""I have photographic evidence of the setup, the living conditions, the space heater inches away from flammable blankets, and the text messages sent from my son's phone that were clearly typed by Stephanie to conceal his truancy. Officer, I am invoking protective custody over my son, and I am formally reporting felony child abuse, child endangerment, and operating an unlicensed child care facility.""
