Chapter 6 - Army CID Takes the Wheel

The next morning at 0800 hours, I arrived in full dress uniform at the Las Cruces Police Department headquarters. Beside me was Captain Marcus Vance, the regional Special Agent-in-Charge for the Army Criminal Investigation Division, and my longtime mentor. When Marcus had heard about what happened to Mason upon my early return from Kuwait, he had mobilized every legal and investigative resource the base could muster.
We sat across a metal conference table from Detective Ray Alvarez of the Las Cruces Special Victims Unit and Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lin.
""Staff Sergeant Ruiz,"" Lin said, placing a thick manila folder on the table between us. ""First of all, I want to commend your swift actions yesterday. If you hadn't administered CPR and identified the exact compound, baby Leo Morales would not have survived the night.""
""Thank you, ma'am. How is the state proceeding?""
Lin smiled thinly, a shark catching the scent of blood in the water. ""Thanks to your son's photographic memory and the meticulous records kept in that floral ledger, we executed a full search warrant on your sister's residence last night. What we found goes far beyond a poorly run home daycare.""
Detective Alvarez opened the file, sliding several photographs across the table.
My stomach churned. The photographs showed boxes upon boxes of bulk, commercial-grade sedatives and unprescribed medications stored in Stephanie's master bedroom closet, along with dozens of forged military power-of-attorney documents, fake medical clearance forms, and thousands of dollars in hidden, unbanked cash stuffed inside cereal boxes.
""She wasn't just pocketing tuition and your monthly child support wire, Toni,"" Alvarez explained grimly. ""She was running an identity theft scheme using your military credentials. Because she had a forged copy of your general power-of-attorney, she applied for three high-limit credit cards in your name, claiming military deployment exemptions to skirt interest rates. She ran up over forty-two thousand dollars in personal debt under your social security number over the last eight months.""
Captain Vance leaned forward, placing his heavy fists on the table. ""Which makes this an active federal offense involving the defrauding of an active-duty service member under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, as well as aggravated identity theft. The Army CID is co-filing federal charges alongside the state's child abuse counts.""
""She thought she was untouchable because you were six thousand miles away in a combat zone,"" Lin said. ""She thought Mason was too young and too scared to ever speak up. She told the neighbors you had died in Kuwait and that she was Mason’s legal guardian.""
The sheer depravity of her lies left me breathless. She had told people I was dead so no one would ask questions about why she was cashing my checks and keeping my son locked in her house like a ghost.

""She will never touch a child again,"" I said, my voice shaking with cold fury. ""And she will never see my son again for as long as I draw breath.""
""Count on it, Sergeant,"" Lin said firmly. ""We are denying bail at this afternoon’s preliminary hearing. She is facing up to forty-five years in state and federal prison.""
