Chapter 10 - A Brand New Command

Six months later, life had settled into the sweet, comforting rhythm of peace and stability.

Following the successful trial where Stephanie accepted a plea deal sentencing her to thirty-two years in the state penitentiary without the possibility of parole, I made the biggest decision of my military career. After seventeen years of active duty and combat deployments, I formally transitioned from active service into the Army Reserve, accepting a permanent civilian investigative instructor position at the military training academy.

No more overseas deployments. No more missing birthdays, holidays, or school assemblies.

We moved into a beautiful, sunlit ranch-style house on the outskirts of town, surrounded by three acres of open desert, with a wide front porch that looked directly toward the Organ Mountains.

It was a warm Saturday evening. The smell of sizzling steak and grilled corn drifted from the patio barbecue. In the backyard, Mason was running around with Buster, a golden retriever rescue pup we had adopted two months ago, laughing hysterically as the dog chased a tennis ball through the green grass.

My phone chimed on the patio table.

It was a text message from Mason’s school tablet inside the house. I picked it up and smiled.

Hey Mom can Elena and baby Leo stay for dessert tonight Buster wants to show Leo his new trick love you

I stared down at the screen, a soft, happy laugh catching in my throat.

Not a single capital letter. Not a single period. Just pure, messy, glorious, run-on eleven-year-old kid typing.

He was finally just a kid again.

""Toni!"" Elena called out, walking through the sliding glass patio door carrying a freshly baked peach cobbler, little Leo balanced happily on her hip, babbling cheerfully at the dog. ""The cobbler is hot! Are the steaks ready?""

""Steaks are coming off right now!"" I called back.

I looked out across the yard at my son, jumping over the grass, his laughter echoing against the desert hills under a wide, endless blue sky.

I had spent seventeen years defending my country across the globe, fighting battles in foreign lands. But standing on that porch, watching the sun dip behind the mountains, surrounded by the people who loved us, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that the greatest victory of my entire life was the battle that brought my son back into my arms.

We were safe. We were whole. And we were finally home."
